    **ABOUT CPC'S EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION PROGRAM:**

    CPC's Early Childhood Education programs provide high-quality, comprehensive school readiness services to families with children from birth to 5 years old. Our early childhood education services strive to meet preschoolers' needs for intellectual, physical, social and emotional growth. This work prepares York County's young children to enter kindergarten prepared to learn.

    **SUMMARY:**

    Depending on center location, a cook might have kitchen aides to help with food prep or might prepare foods by himself/herself. Floater Cook will be responsible for filling in at any of the EHS/HS kitchens in the absence of the Head Cook/Assistant Cook. Floater Cook must have a valid Driver's License and reliable transportation. They will be required to travel to different sites on a regular basis and with short notice. Floater Cook must complete Child and Adult Care Food Program paperwork as applicable.

    **ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**

    Is committed to the vision and mission of Community Progress Council and Early Head Start/Head Start of York County.

    Prepare breakfast, lunch, and snack according to the Head Start menu and Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) regulations and in a timely manner. (Substitution of food items is not allowed, unless previously approved by Food Service Coordinator). Cooking duties may include, but are not limited to:

    + Washing, peeling, cutting, and seeding vegetables and fruits. Cleaning, cutting, and grinding meats, poultry, and seafood. Stirring and straining soups and sauces. Weighing and measuring designated ingredients. Carrying pans, kettles, and trays of food to and from workstations, stove, and refrigerator. Stores foods in designated areas.

    Deliver the food to the classrooms and return dishes to the kitchen at the scheduled times.

    Assist in planning menus to ensure that food is appetizing and nutritionally suitable for children in accordance with CACFP regulations.

    In certain Head Start Center locations, purchase foods from local merchants.

    Maintain inventory of food and paper supplies. Submit list of needs to the Head Cook, if applicable to that Head Start Center.

    Clean kitchen, storerooms, counter tops, stove, oven, sink, utensils, and equipment.

    Cover all equipment not in use.

    Receive supplies from vendors; this includes checking in supplies as they arrive to assure correct counts and temperatures of refrigerated/frozen foods, signing receipts, and forwarding invoices to the nutrition office.

    Follow sanitation and safety guidelines established by Head Start Program.

    Remove garbage from kitchen as applicable.

    Delegate cooking responsibilities to cook aides, volunteer and/or participant trainees as assigned to the center.

    Meet with Food Service Coordinator at least monthly for training and resource sharing including cross-training in order to perform a number of processes within the program.

    Attend all staff meetings, parent meetings, or training sessions as required. May be required to attend program functions outside regularly scheduled work hours

    Actively participate in agency task forces and work groups, as assigned by supervisor/management, to assist in developing, implementing, and fulfilling goals and action plans of the Head Start vision and mission.

    Always maintain a safe and orderly environment.

    **SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES**

    Ability to demonstrate good customer service to internal and external clients and be able to work with diverse individuals while demonstrating good communication skills both oral and written.

    Ability to take personal responsibility for yourself and your team, demonstrating leadership and supervisory skills. Being dependable, flexible, professional, and cooperative in a team environment.

    In some centers, a Cook will directly supervise kitchen aides and volunteers/trainees. Responsibilities include training, directing the work, appraising performance, disciplining, and addressing complaints or problems.

    **EDUCATION AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS**

    High school diploma or GED preferred but will otherwise consider applicant who passes a proficiency test (a test that demonstrates language, math, and reasoning skills described below).

    Three months related work experience or training required.

    ServSafe certification preferred. (Must be obtained within one year of hire date to maintain position. Head Start funding is available.)

    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

    Ability to write messages, record data, and complete reports.

    Ability to communicate effectively with employees, clients, vendors. Whenever possible, speak the client's language to the best of your ability.

    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

    Experience with Microsoft Office Suite in a Windows environment is helpful and preferred.

    **CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:**

    Department of Human Services FBI Clearance, National Sex Offender Registry, and PA Child Abuse Certification required prior to hire; PA State Criminal History due within 30 days of hire date; a physical assessment including a tuberculosis skin test and "Mandated Reporter" training due within 90-days of hire. Some position may require a valid DL with acceptable driving history.
