    Job Summary


    The Operations Engineer, Bridges and Structures (B&S) United States (U.S.) is responsible for working with B&S Managers and B&S Supervisors in the United States.

    The incumbent is accountable for assisting with leading construction projects and maintenance programs for bridge, culvert and related structure projects.


    Main Responsibilities


    Office


    • Lead structure projects performed by contractors
    • Assist in leading structure projects performed by CN personnel
    • Coordinate Region initiated consultant assignments
    • Plan, estimate, coordinate and execute work while controlling project costs
    • Review and prepare engineering drawings, tender documents and specifications
    • Perform contract administration, advance progress and final payments
    • Review structure inspection reports and assist with developing 5-year capital and maintenance plans
    • Develop and maintain electronic structure files including drawings, correspondence, photos and related data
    Field Technical Support


    • Review drawings for construction and prepare material estimates
    • Provide technical support to CN and contractor field personnel including site visits
    • Perform site inspections to investigate inspection findings and develop repair plans
    • Perform site safety inspections to ensure compliance with CN and regulatory regulations
    Working Conditions

    The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The role is partially performed outdoors in various types of weather and environmental conditions.

    The incumbent must be available to work shifts and weekends when necessary, be available on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidences, and have the ability to work at heights with appropriate protective gear.

    The role requires occasional travel (25%) to remote locations.


    Requirements


    Experience

    Construction, Engineering or Project Management


    • Between 2 to 5 years of experience in construction, engineering or project management, preferably in a railroad environment
    o Experience with structure design and structure construction activities
    o Experience with steel and concrete structures and related repair work
    o Experience in construction or municipal project management
    o Experience will railway work procedures and related work environments*o Experience with timber structures and related repair work*o Experience with geotechnical engineering or foundation design*o Experience with environmental engineering or environmental protective legislation**Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset

    Education/Certification/Designation


    • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, preferably with a Structural Engineering emphasis
    • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE)
    • Professional Engineer (PE) or ability to obtain the license within 2 years
    • Valid Driver's License

    • Ability to learn new skills such as the U.S. Operating Rules (USOR) and fall protection
    • Knowledge of American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way (AREMA) Manual
