    Manufacturing Engineering Consultant - Major Orthopedic Medical Device Manufacturer

    Position Overview

    The Staff Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, testing, documenting, and implementing manufacturing processes, tooling, and fixtures throughout the product lifecycle, from design through production. You'll help capture critical information for product process development and work closely with Production, Quality, and R&D to support manufacturing operations and product launch timelines.

    What You'll Do

    You'll be a key technical contributor, working across cross-functional teams to drive process excellence and product success. Responsibilities include:

    • Collaborate with R&D, QA, and Production to design, develop, test, document, and implement manufacturing processes, tooling, and fixtures
    • Design and develop manufacturing processes in compliance with Design Control and applicable regulatory requirements
    • Collect and analyze data on process performance and capability for new and existing products
    • Prototype and develop proof-of-concept designs and bench models to test concepts in simulated environments
    • Develop, validate, and maintain test methods
    • Perform tolerance analysis for components, materials, packaging, and in-house processing supplies
    • Lead the development and maintenance of process FMEAs (pFMEAs)
    • Prepare user requirements, technical specifications, and design specifications
    • Identify process needs, support operations management, and implement required equipment/fixturing development
    • Develop and maintain documentation supporting design control and Quality System requirements (BOMs, MPIs, LHRs, procedures, lot history records, etc.)
    • Evaluate existing engineering processes and implement improvements
    • Lead or participate in structured problem solving using DMAIC
    • Lead or support process and product improvement projects with production, R&D engineers, and technicians
    • Support supplier selection and technical development with Procurement and R&D
    • Recommend and evaluate new technologies to improve performance and reliability
    • Conduct productivity and cost analyses (direct labor, time studies, materials estimates) and propose scalability improvements
    • Create a stability matrix in Phase 4 to assess sustainability of product transfer (in partnership with Sustaining Engineering)
    • Identify cost-reduction opportunities and implement savings strategies for existing products
    • Support product line transfers and qualification/validation efforts (IQ/OQ/PQ)
    • Perform other duties as assigned

    What You Bring

    Required:

    • Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or equivalent
    • 0–5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment (medical device experience strongly preferred)
    • Strong understanding of engineering materials, component selection, and design for reliability and manufacturability
    • Knowledge of Quality System requirements and relevant regulations (QSR, FDA, ISO, MDD, etc.)
    • Experience with process validations (IQ/OQ/PQ), 6S, and Lean Manufacturing principles
    • Proficiency with statistics and statistical tools (capability studies/Cpk, DOE)
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including presentations and documentation
    • Experience with tools such as SolidWorks, Minitab, or similar
    • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities
    • Able to work independently and collaboratively, adapting to changing needs

    Highly Preferred:

    • 2+ years of CNC machining experience
    • Ability to program CNC (ideal)
