Are you looking for a new role to make a lasting impact on the quality of education across Nebraska? NDE is looking for an Academic Officer & Office Administrator of Teaching, Learning, & Assessment to implement strong systems and support ALL school districts, and ensure every child in Nebraska receives a great education.

We're looking for candidates with deep knowledge of best practices and current trends in education, but also ability to network with other states to understand their best practices and how they might apply in Nebraska. You will lead strategic, forward-thinking processes to continue support of educators in classrooms and shape the future of education in Nebraska

Office Location:
This position is assigned to our office located at 84th & O St, Lincoln, NE.

Pay:
$133,747.85/year

The selected candidate's skills, abilities, education, and experience may provide an opportunity for a higher salary rate.

Essential Functions

  • Provides leadership, coordination, and implementation for sections and programs related to Teaching, Learning, and Assessment, including content area standards, instruction, instructional materials, curriculum, assessment, and professional learning.
  • Provides direction and guidance related to the development and implementation of Nebraska Content Area Standards.
  • Oversees the Statewide Assessment Section to ensure balanced assessment of Nebraska Content Area Standards.
  • Leads processes designed to guide selection and implementation of high-quality, standards-based instructional resources within local school districts (e.g., curriculum, digital resources, open educational resources, assessment resources).
  • Collaborates with and advises agency leadership on significant issues, program developments, and operations of the Office of Teaching, Learning, and Assessment. Maintains an understanding of the programs, services, and operational functions and appropriately implements policies, procedures, and guidelines. Cooperates with agency leadership to implement the NDE Strategic Plan and encourage agency coherence.
  • Establishes and fosters strategic partnerships among state agencies, nonprofit organizations, postsecondary education institutions, and business and industry partners.  Coordinates program/policy development and implementation with other state agencies, Educational Service Units (ESUs), postsecondary education institutions, and business and industry partners.
  • Coordinates review and preparation of relevant education-related legislation, providing assistance to the Governor's Office and Nebraska State Legislature.
  • Works collaboratively to complete annual and biennial budgets, and ensures the budget reflects major projects and initiatives, operational requirements, and changes in state and/or federal regulations.
  • Provides leadership in the hiring, supervision, and potential discipline of staff.  Conducts performance management activities including establishing annual goals related to the strategic plan, holding check-in meetings to discuss goal progress, and completing performance appraisals.  Facilitates a continuous learning environment by promoting professional development to ensure all employees have the opportunity and skills to be efficient and effective in meeting the goals of the agency.  Delegates work and projects appropriately among staff.
  • Maintains regular & reliable attendance, possesses a valid driver's license and travels independently, and works in a variety of settings.

Working Conditions and Travel
:

This position requires approximately 70% of work time spent in an office environment; the remaining 30% is spent traveling or working in alternative sites such as schools, educational service units, and other service agencies. There is also approximately 15 days of overnight travel per year.

Requirements / Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications
: Master's degree in education or a related field, current Nebraska teaching or administrative certificate, and eight years of experience related to the essential functions of the position to include leadership and managerial experience. Any equivalent education and/or work experience may be substituted in order to meet the minimum qualifications of the position.

NOTE: A Nebraska Teaching or Administrative Certificate per 92 NAC 21 must be possessed by the time the candidate begins employment at the Nebraska Department of Education and an active certificate maintained while in the position.

Preferred Qualifications:
The completion of a doctorate or equivalent academic endeavor such as a Six-Year Specialist Certificate, and demonstrated successful preK-12 leadership experience (director, specialist, coordinator, department head, administrator) including direct supervisory experience.
