    Job Summary:


    Provide assessment and individual and group therapy to a diverse student population; provide consultation to faculty and staff regarding students' counseling needs; assists with planning and conducting of workshops, training, professional development and other outreach activities at all IHCC locations; provides crisis assessment and intervention services; and practices in accordance with appropriate legal and ethical standards.

    Minimum Job Requirements:

    • Minimum Master's Degree in counseling, counselor education, counseling psychology, social work, or closely related field and eligible for Iowa licensure as a mental health counselor, psychologist, social worker, or marriage and family therapist is required. The person in this position must meet all ongoing requirements to maintain a Counseling License as set forth by the Iowa Board of Behavioral Science.
    • Minimum two years' experience providing direct client therapy. College counseling center experience and experience serving a diverse population preferred.
    • Must relate well to traditional and non-traditional aged college students, work well with a diverse population and have the ability to work a flexible schedule.

    Work Performed:

    • Provides individual assessment and counseling services to students while establishing helping relationships.
    • Provides outpatient mental health services to promote individualized patient recovery.
    • Provides group counseling services.
    • Formulates treatment plans.
    • Assists in appropriate referral practices.
    • Provides crisis assessment and intervention services during work hours and after hours when necessary.
    • Refer clients for hospitalization or psychiatric evaluation as necessary.
    • Build working relationships with college and community resources/agencies that can positively affect the day to day lives of students.
    • Build working relationships with college and community resources/agencies that can provide additional resources to students.
    • Work closely with Indian Hills Community College Student Development staff, including Residence Life and Security to identify individuals who may need access to mental health counseling.
    • Assist with student-athlete drug testing procedures by partnering with the Indian Hills Sports Medicine team to provide services in the event of a failed test.
    • Complete and maintain confidential documentation in a timely and accurate manner according to Federal, State, and Indian Hills Community College guidelines.
    • Consult with faculty, staff, students, family members, and community resources concerning counseling needs of students and provides intervention and referral techniques to faculty and staff dealing with distressed students.
    • Assists with planning and conducting workshops, trainings, and other professional development to various college groups as needed and maintains appropriate documentation of services provided.
    • Serve on campus CARE Team.
    • Assist with the Counseling and Prevention Resource Center (CPRC) strategic vision, working in collaboration with the staff in Student Development and faculty to accomplish it. This includes assisting with translating this vision into action and establishing and evaluating goals of and guidelines for Counseling Services.
    • Report to the CPRC Mental Health Counselor, the Vice President, Student Development and Operations, the Associate Dean, Student Development and/or the Director, Student Life any unusual or concerning trends observed or experienced by student body whole maintaining student confidentiality.
    • Be familiar with and assist in enforce college policies and regulations and state and federal laws as it pertains to Counseling Services.
    • Be familiar with the Federal Right to Privacy Act and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Abide by the acts, by maintaining confidentiality in all matters concerning students, faculty and staff, only providing information on a need to know basis.
    • Consult with the CPRC Mental Health Counselor and the Vice President, Student Development and Operations, (and as needed, the Associate Dean, Student Development and the Director, Student Life), with regard to clinical situations in which the health and/or safety of a student/client or others is at risk.
    • Be familiar with campus emergency procedures and protocol.
    • Provide applicable care coordination and related communication with medical professionals in the community, including hospitals and mental health practitioners. Relay any applicable information to the CPRC Mental Health Counselor, who is the college's point of contact and liaison with community medical and mental health professionals. Be available on an emergency-only basis after hours for consultation or crisis intervention.
    • Assist in designing and updating a robust web site of mental health information and links to mental health information sites.
    • Assist in creating an on-going marketing program to continuously inform students, faculty and staff regarding the services available from the Counseling Services area.
    • Maintain excellent relationships with hospital emergency rooms, area mental health care facilities, and other counseling service agencies.
    • Maintain knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature and attending related seminars and conferences. Maintain current certifications and training.
    • Perform other duties and tasks as appropriately assigned which contribute to achieving the goals of the CPRC and Student Development departments, and the overall goals of the college.
    • Meet with students and/or staff at multiple Indian Hills sites including the Ottumwa Main Campus, North Campus, Centerville and additional county service center and academy sites as needed. This position will be regularly located on the Indian Hills Main Campus.
    • Mental Health Counselor is part of the Student Development team and assists with implementation of strategies and programs consistent with Student Development priorities.
    • Work affectively with the CPRC Electronic Management System (Simple Practice), and campus case management software Maxient, student information system Datatel and imaging system Content 7.
    • Work affectively with the CPRC telehealth systems (Simple Practice and ); as well as scheduling systems to include Outlook, Simple Practice and Calendly as necessary.
    • Must have ability to express self clearly and effectively, including strong oral, written and listening communication capabilities.
    • Must be able to assess safety of individuals and the community (e.g., suicidal and homicidal threats) and respond in a manner to increase safety for all involved in crisis situations; including notifying and working with the CPRC Mental Health Counselor in such instances.
    • Must be able to handle multiple and complex tasks simultaneously.
    • Work closely with the CPRC Mental Health Counselor relating to understanding and use of budget-related operations.
