    General Statement

    Montana State University seeks qualified individuals to provide non-tenurable level instruction and/or related functions. Instructors are needed to teach classes depending upon need and available funding.

    Applications are accepted on a continual basis (unless otherwise indicated) and will be maintained in pool for two years. After two years, candidates will be notified to re-submit materials for continued consideration.

    The department or program search committees or hiring authority will review and evaluate the submitted application materials. Applicants will be notified if their application is being retained in the non-tenure track faculty hiring pool.


    Appointments are on a part-time basis and vary in duration, a couple weeks, a semester or an academic year, depending on the specific needs of the department/program.

    Salary is dependent on number of courses taught and duration.

    Duties and Responsibilities


    We hope to attract applicants who can teach in a diverse University community and have demonstrated ability in helping students from diverse backgrounds succeed.


    • Teaching on-campus or online courses.
    • Advising, evaluating and assisting students.
    • Curriculum and/or course development.
    • Participating in weekly faculty meetings.
    • Meeting regularly with, collaborating with, and evaluating peer leader, if one is assigned to your section.
    Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills


    • Master or doctoral degree in a relevant field.

    • Prior teaching experience directly related to the position for which you are applying

    • Non-Tenure Track Faculty - Any position that is .5 FTE or more is represented by the Associated Faculty of Montana State University ( AFMSU ). Faculty covered by AFMSU must begin paying either membership dues or representation fees within thirty (30) days of hire. This is a condition of employment.     • Any position less than .5 FTE is not represented by the Union and is not required to pay dues.

    The Program

    The Department


    The Department of Microbiology & Immunology ( MBI ) currently consists of 20 tenure-track, 5 research, and 6 teaching faculty, 40 graduate students, and over 300 undergraduate students, and it is jointly administered by the College of Agriculture and the College of Letters and Science.

    Faculty members are highly productive scholars with substantial research records in leading refereed journals, extramural grant funding, and high quality teaching.

    MBI is a diverse and comprehensive department with research efforts in pathogen biology, bioremediation, biofuels, immunology, cell and developmental biology, microbial ecology, host/pathogen interactions, biofilm biology, and geomicrobiology.

    The department houses Montana Medical Laboratory Science Professional Program and the new Washington, Idaho, Montana, Utah ( WIMU ) Cooperative Veterinary Medicine program the Center for Zoonotic and Emerging Infectious Diseases, Center for Wildlife Health, and contributes significantly to the Center for Biofilm Engineering and the Thermal Biology Institute at MSU .

    The department offers seven undergraduate tracks within the Microbiology major that include: General Microbiology, Environmental Microbiology, Pre-Med, Pre-Vet, Environmental Health, Biotechnology, and Medical Lab Science.

    Additionally, the department provides advising for all Pre-veterinary students at MSU and offers a Certificate in Pre-Veterinary Medicine.

    The College


    As the foundational component of Montana's land grant university at Montana State University, the College of Agriculture ( COA ) and the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station ( MAES ) provide instruction in dynamic degree programs and conduct research relevant to the challenges in Montana's agricultural and natural resource communities.

    We create opportunities for students, staff and faculty to excel through hands-on learning, to serve through campus and community engagement, to explore unique solutions to distinct and interesting questions and to connect Montanans with the global community through research discoveries and outreach.

    The COA offers eleven baccalaureate, nine masters, and four doctoral degree programs from five departments and one division.

    MAES conducts research through the Department of Research Centers (Corvallis, Conrad, Creston, Havre, Huntley, Moccasin, Sidney), in collaboration with other academic departments, near Bozeman, and throughout Montana.
