    Laney College


    Laney College, in the heart of vibrant, multicultural downtown Oakland, features the cosmopolitan atmosphere and human energy of a big-city university.

    Laney is adjacent to the Oakland Museum of California, blocks from historic Chinatown and a pleasant stroll from Lake Merritt.

    Since 1948, Laney has provided educational opportunities to students throughout the East Bay and beyond.

    Serving approximately 14,000 students each semester, Laney reflects the incredible diversity of the community that surrounds it and provides opportunities to traditionally underserved populations.

    Dozens of languages are spoken on Laney's campus each day.

    The school boasts a proven track record of success with exceptional educational programs.

    The college was given full accreditation by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) in summer a distinction awarded to only five community colleges out of the 27 reviewed that year.

    In addition, Laney ranks among the top community colleges in California in transferring students to U.C. Berkeley.

    Merritt College

    Merritt College is a public, comprehensive, two-year college, maintained by the Peralta Community College District in Alameda County.

    With a comprehensive day and evening program of transfer, technical, occupational and basic skills education, the College is committed to meeting the educational needs of the diverse student population it serves.


    Located on a 125-acre site in the hills of East Oakland, Merritt College combines modern, spacious facilities with a spectacular view of the entire Bay Area.

    An integral part of a large, busy urban community, the location provides a sense of tranquility and peace.

    Berkeley City College

    Berkeley City College is just blocks from the University of California - Berkeley. The energetic new urban campus stands on the cutting edge of community college education.

    University preparation and occupational training classes form the core of the Berkeley City College curriculum, which also features model programs in fields as diverse as American Sign Language, Biotechnology, and Multimedia.


    The new campus is located in downtown Berkeley, and houses state-of-the-art facilities assuring that the college meets the educational needs of students and the community.

    With the opening of the new facility, Berkeley City College is significantly expanding educational programs at the college and increasing student enrollment and community participation in college activities.

    District Office


    The Peralta Community College District is a two-year college system, dedicated to providing comprehensive educational and community services to the communities it serves, including the cities of Albany, Alameda, Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland and Piedmont California.

    The District enrolls over 25,000 students in a broad range of transfer and occupational curricula.

    The colleges in the District include College of Alameda, Laney College, Merritt College and Berkeley City College, which operate under the governance of a seven- member Board of Trustees and are administered by a Chancellor/Superintendent.

    Position Information

    Job Title SUBSTITUTE CUSTODIAN POOL Time Base Up to 40 hrs/week as needed

    Substitute temporary custodian positions available. Length of assignments will vary and are on an as needed basis. Day, swing and graveyard shifts.


    Under supervision, the Custodian performs a wide variety of custodial duties for cleaning assigned areas, rooms, buildings or office space.

    It differs from the class of Lead Custodian in that the latter has lead supervisory responsibilities. This is the working level of the custodial series.

    Incumbents are generally expected to be able to use standard cleaning materials and equipment in the performance of their duties.

    This position is represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE), Local 39.

    Duties & Responsibilities

    • Cleans, sweeps, scrubs, strips, mops and waxes floors
    • Vacuums, shampoos and extracts dirt from rugs and carpets
    • Cleans rest rooms, offices, shops, classrooms, kitchens, labs, theater, locker rooms and gym areas
    • Washes walls and removes graffiti
    • Cleans windows and drinking fountains
    • Empties and cleans waste containers
    • Cleans chalk boards, white boards and erasers
    • Replaces lights and cleans diffusers
    • Empties garage and trash cans
    • Reports needed repairs, hazardous materials or safety violations to supervisors
    • Assists in moving supplies and arranging furniture and equipment
    • Sets up facilities for special events
    • May assist in ordering, receiving, storing and inventorying of working supplies from college stores
    • May make minor non-technical repairs
    • Performs other relates duties as assigned
    Minimum Qualifications


    • Equivalent to one year of custodial or janitorial experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities.
    • Applicant must have demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college staff, faculty, and students.
    Desirable Qualifications


    Knowledge of:

    • Methods of cleaning and preserving floors, walls, furniture, and fixtures
    • Cleaning materials, disinfectants, hazardous materials, and equipment used in custodial work
    • Common tools and their uses

    Ability to:

    • Use cleaning materials and equipment safely and with skill and efficiency
    • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions
    • Move supplies and furniture and set up rooms and buildings for special occasions
    • Use common electrical cleaning equipment
    Environmental Demands


    • Work performed indoors and outdoors often in uncontrolled areas.
    • Noise and vibrations are experienced in the operation of cleaning and maintenance equipment.
    • Frequent exposure to bleach and other chemical and cleaning agents.

    MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Must be able to communicate in English (speaking, reading and writing) at a level to safely and effectively perform the essential functions of the Custodian position.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Frequent lifting up to 75 lbs.
    • Frequent carrying up to 75 lbs.
    • Frequent pushing up to 100 lbs.
    • Constant standing and walking
    • Frequent stooping, squatting and body twisting
    • Reaching at high and low levels
    Tools & Equipment Used


    • Frequent use of ladders that meet safety regulations, brooms, squeegees, brushes, mops, vacuum cleaners, high and low speed floor machines, yard blowers, pressure washers and yard vacuums
    • Operates gas tractor or electrical vehicles

    Part-time, temporary, non-academic employees are enrolled in a deferred compensation plan known as APPLE (Accumulation Program for Part-time and Limited-service Employees).

    Employees must make a 3.75% contribution each pay period, which is matched by a 3.75% contribution by the District.
