- Be responsible for determining the status of the patient, developing a plan of anesthesia care, and acquainting the patient of the responsible adult with the proposed plan. This process may include documentation to indicate that the risks and benefits were discussed, and the patient has chosen to move forward with planned procedures.
- Develop an appropriate plan of anesthesia care based upon:
a) Reviewing the patient's medical record;
b) Interviewing and examining the patient;
c) Obtaining and/or reviewing tests and consultations necessary to the conduct of anesthesia; and
d) Determining the appropriate prescription of pre-operative medications as necessary to the conduct of anesthesia.
e) Interpretation of pre-operative echocardiographic and/or invasive hemodynamic measurements;
f) Determining the appropriate cardiovascular and/or cerebral monitoring modalities. - The cardiac anesthesiologist must be familiar with the conduct of and provide transesophageal echocardiography guidance for procedures commonly performed in the cardiac catheterization lab.
- The cardiac anesthesiologist must be familiar with the conduct of cardiac surgery, specifically, potential surgical complications, the conduct of and weaning from cardiopulmonary bypass, hemodynamic and cardiac rhythm monitoring and management, cannulation strategies, deep hypothermic circulatory arrest, and management of post-cardiotomy coagulopathy.
- The cardiac anesthesiologist must be familiar with lung isolation strategies and minimally invasive and robotic cardiac surgery.

Summary
The VA Palo Alto Health Care System, has an immediate opening for a Fee Basis Physician (Cardiac Anesthesiologist) in our Anesthesiology Service.
Duties
The cardiac anesthesiologist reports directly to the Chief of the Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine Service and is responsible for providing medical and surgical services to eligible Veterans and active-duty service members. The incumbent practices in the Service with work assigned primarily in the Operating Room (OR), Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), and non-OR specialty procedural areas (i.e.: IR/Interventional Radiology, CCL/Cardiac Cath. Lab, GI/Gastrointestinal Unit), and in areas where anesthesia services are provided throughout the health care system.
The cardiac anesthesiologist will:
Work Schedule: Fee Basis; this system of VA compensation pays based on the specific task or service provided; providers are paid in accordance with the fee schedule listed above; Hospitalist are scheduled based on the needs of the service.
