    Primary Purpose
    The Resident Director holds the responsibility of assisting with Southwestern Student Residence Life department. As a live-on member of the Housing staff, the primary function is to create a living-learning community that will foster comprehensive student development. This position should have a strong commitment to student engagement and be capable of responding in a positive manner to a wide variety of situations.

    Description of Essential Functions

    Residence Life Leadership (70% of Time)
    1. Directly supervising Resident Assistants, within their housing role, to develop and implement programs and activities that enrich resident learning and growth outside of the classroom, using sound residential life programming principles, departmental guidelines, and national standards and benchmarks. This will include interviewing, selecting, training, and evaluating student staff as needed
    2. Assist in the establishment and promotion of unity and teamwork among the staff members by providing team-building and training opportunities.
    3. Maintain visibility in the community by regularly interacting with residents, attending programs, and visiting with staff and residents in the residential area, at the dining facility, and around campus.
    4. Convey and promote student accountability to the Student Housing Room and Board Agreement as well as the Student Code of Conduct.
    5. Establish and communicate clear expectations of staff and resident community expectations based on mutual respect and the creation of a supportive living environment.
    6. Administer student conduct meetings with the Director for policy violations and behavioral and community issues. Process related letters and documentation relating to student engagement. Participation may be necessary in the development of a judicial board with other campus constituents.
    7. Counsel and refer individual students and groups regarding personal and academic needs to college staff and resources.
    8. Respond to student emergencies and crises including but not limited to health, relationships, safety, and campus living both during normal business hours as well as after-hours as part of an on-call duty rotation.
    9. Educate staff and residents on safety and security concerns and appropriate emergency response procedures.
    10. Represent Student Housing on College committees as needed. Provide leadership for committees and/or special projects as determined.
    11. Assist with all Student Housing opening and closing dates.
    Community Development & Education (30% of Time)
    1. Promote and facilitate campus wide programming efforts working in conjunction with other campus departments.
    2. Work with other Resident Directors to manage the student housing programming calendar.
    3. Assist with advising and evaluating all Resident Assistant programming efforts, including program approval, staffing, implementation, and evaluation.
    4. Assist in the management and development of departmental and college summer conference programs with the Assistant Director of Residence Life.
    5. Develop programs and activities designed to improve student success and learning depending on the individual's strengths, interests, and/or experience.
    Performs Other Duties and Special Projects as Required/Assigned

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
    One to three (1-3) years of experience in group/student living at a college or university.

    • Exhibit a high level of computer literacy, sufficient to use software such as email, word processing, spreadsheets, and databases to produce correspondence, documents and reports. Ability to use Internet, Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel as needed. Able to learn and function in the College's information management system.
    • Ability to follow established college and department procedures and work independently to accomplish those procedures. Ability to implement general directives and Board policies in the assigned areas of responsibility. Ability to explain established policies and procedures using judgment and diplomacy.
    • Ability to plan, organize, and carry out activities independently. Strong time management skills to support efficient work production and meet deadlines.
    • Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision and training. Ability to develop others to perform and contribute to the organization by providing ongoing feedback and by providing opportunities to learn through formal and informal methods.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    Applicants for this position possessing one or more of the following knowledge, skills and abilities with receive preferred consideration through the selection process.
    • Master's degree in College Student Services and Administration, or a related field from an accredited institution.
    • One (1) year of live-on experience as a Resident Director or equivalent position with demonstrated supervision and leadership skills with group living situations in residence life.
    • Demonstrated student organizational leadership experience in any college extracurricular activity, volunteer or work experience with any student service area.
