    Description

    The Ai Laboratory /) within the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is seeking a dedicated and proactive Laboratory Specialist. Our lab is renowned for its work in protein engineering, with a primary focus on the creation of molecular biosensors that shed light on cellular and organismal signaling. We also leverage protein-based tools in live cells and rodent models to advance our understanding of pathophysiology and to pioneer novel therapeutic strategies for conditions such as diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, and cancer. We are also venturing into the development of biosensors that can function as self-wellness alert devices or diagnostics in resource-limited environments.

    Responsibilities of the successful candidate include:

    • Utilizing existing skills in mammalian cell culture and/or prior experience with mouse work.
    • Managing lab inventory including plasmids, cell lines, and chemicals.
    • Procuring general lab supplies and assisting with overall laboratory maintenance, which includes maintaining a clean workspace and preparing buffers and other reagents.
    • Supporting the Principal Investigator and other lab members, such as graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, with their research projects.
    • Participating in and presenting research progress at regular lab meetings, attending departmental seminars, and national scientific conferences.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    • A Bachelor's degree in a related field and at least 3 years of relevant experience.
    • Alternatively, 6 years of related lab experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
    • Experience with either cell culture or mouse work is mandatory.
    • Additional experience in molecular biology and protein purification would be advantageous.
    • Ability to draft routine reports and maintain accurate and detailed records of work performed.
    • Exceptional written and oral communication skills are essential

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
