    Position Summary

    The Oregon Zoo is looking for a Part-Time Family Farm Staff employee. This position will include direct care for the animals in the Family Farm and presenting formal and informal educational live-animal programs throughout the year to a wide variety of audiences, with a particular focus on younger guests. Applicants should be comfortable working in a fast-paced variable environment and be a strong team player. Requires excellent communication and critical thinking skills.

    As the Part-Time Family Farm Staff you will
    • Present engaging and inspirational conservation education programming to a variety of audiences using effective storytelling techniques. Presentations may include animal encounters, media appearances, public events, and other zoo-related programming.
    • Work with managers and internal stakeholders to follow appropriate presentation methods for animals used in educational settings, guided by industry best practice standards.
    • Handle and train the Farm species under care for programs using operant conditioning techniques.
    • Perform day-to-day husbandry as required for species under care. This includes maintaining standards of care as outlined by area curator, administering prescribed medications, preparing prescribed diet and monitoring food consumption, creating and providing behavioral enrichment, and complying with all record keeping protocols. Regularly communicate with supervisor regarding husbandry.
    • Perform daily care and maintenance of enclosures, food and water receptacles; check condition of animal environments to assess security and safety of animals; alert supervisor and initiate corrective actions as needed.
    • Observe animals to identify normal and abnormal behavior, health problems, adjustments to diet, and changes or response to medication. Identify and report concerns to area supervisor.
    • Maintain care standards and comply with all USDA and AZA rules, regulations, and guidelines; work in compliance with safety rules, OSHA standards, work rules, and zoo area policies and procedures.
    • Document supply needs and work with supervisor to acquire items used for the area's daily operations of animal care, training, and educational programming.
    • Assist the public and other employees in a professional and courteous manner and follow both written and verbal instructions.
    • Effectively communicate to area supervisors, team members, and other zoo departments and guests.
    • Perform related duties as assigned.

    • Knowledge of animal husbandry and presentation techniques for a variety of domestic and exotic animal species.

    • Ability to work well independently and function as a team member.
    • Ability to learn prescribed routines quickly and work without close supervision.
    • Ability to perform essential duties, which may include lifting up to 50 pounds and working outside in all weather conditions.

    Minimum qualifications
    • Associate's degree in a field related program area and 2 years experience working with animals in educational programming; OR
    • High school diploma or GED and 4 years of experience working with animals in educational programming; OR
    • Any combination of education and experience which would provide the candidate with the desired skills, knowledge, and ability required to perform the job
    Part-Time: This position is a part-time opportunity expected to work 20 hours per week.

    You do not need to have the following preferred qualifications/transferable skills to qualify. However, keep in mind we may consider them when identifying the most qualified candidates. Your transferable skills are any skills you have gained through education, work experience, including the military, or life experience that are relevant for this position.
    • Experience presenting scripted and non-scripted programming to the public
    • Additional education in biology, zoology, educational interpreting, or a related field
    • Experience with positive reinforcement training of animals.
    • Experience with animal husbandry in a zoo setting.

    COMPENSATION, BENEFITS AND REPRESENTATON
    The full-salary range for this position is step 1 - $29.65 per hour to step 7 - $39.76 per hour. However, unless a candidate's qualifications justify, based on the requirements and Metro's internal equity review process, the appointment will likely be made between step 1 - $29.65 per hour to the equity range step 3 - $32.70 per hour.

    This position is or is not eligible for overtime and is non-represented or represented by AFSCME 3580. It is classified as an Education Technician.
