    Description

    Assists in carrying out technical and supervisory activities related to the management and operation of the Home Chemical Collection Center and Household Hazardous Waste Collection process.

    Serves as a hands-on team participant in handling and processing home chemical products and the mobilization of equipment and supplies for special events.


    Management Scope:
    Assists in supervising staff and functions as a lead in the absence of the HHW Program Coordinator.

    Participates in the collection of chemical products; and arranges/conducts home/off-site pickups of household hazardous waste.


    Receives, identifies, segregates, stores and prepares household hazardous waste shipments for recycling, treatment or disposal in accordance with state and federal regulations; performs and assists in coordinating facility, equipment and vehicle maintenance tasks.


    Responds to inquiries and educates the general public on hazardous waste programs, including eligibility requirements, recycling, hazardous materials use/reuse, disposal alternatives and collection and treatment options.


    Assists in developing safety standards and operating procedures, proposes changes and updates to improve environmental health and safety plans, monitors and ensures compliance, and participates in spill control and emergency response efforts.

    Supervises staff and coordinates all collection activities and operations in the absence of the HHW Program Coordinator.

    Performs other duties as assigned.


    Education and experience equivalent to a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in Environmental Science, Chemistry, or in a related field of study.

    One (1) year experience in hazardous waste management or related field.

    Knowledge of standard software applications.

    Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, departments and the general public.

    Requires 40 hour HAZWOPER Certification and a Class A Texas Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months of employment. Mandatory Hazmat physical required during first two weeks of employment and annually thereafter.

    Must be able to work varied days and shift schedules, to include weekends and holidays. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., assisted, continually over a ten-hour shift. Must be able to operate forklift, conveyor belt system, pneumatic tools, and other power tools. Must be able to use mechanical devices to move full drums weighing up to 800 lbs. Ability to travel to various work site locations. Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions.
