    The New York Public Library (NYPL) has been an essential provider of free books, information, ideas, and education for all New Yorkers for more than 100 years.     NYPL is seeking a Junior Library Custodian to maintain an environment that is clean, safe and comfortable for our Library users and employees.

    Location Staten Island Compensation $33,599 / year Department Facilities Employment Type Full Time Reporting To John Fradella ** Key Responsibilities**

    Under the general supervision of the Cleaning Operations Coordinator, the Junior Library Custodian:

    Cleans and maintains the Library building and grounds

    Buffs, strips and waxes floors

    Shampoos carpets

    Replaces light bulbs

    Handles snow removal

    Prepares maintenance reports and maintains inventory of bathroom and cleaning supplies

    Takes necessary action to safeguard the building during an emergency and escalates issues to appropriate personnel

    Communicates with Library Manager on a regular basis to determine branch needs

    Travels between branches within assigned network

    Will be assigned to two sites and may be assigned to work at other locations as needed

    ** Skills Knowledge & Expertise**

    High School Diploma or GED and prior basic custodial/building superintendent work

    Successfully demonstrated experience and knowledge of the standard practices, materials and equipment to be used in commercial building cleaning work.

    Knowledge of material safety data sheets, safety practices and procedures

    Good interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills

    Demonstrated flexibility and reliability

    Ability to perform manual work consisting of cleaning, heavy lifting, snow removal and working from high ladders, scaffolds and electrical lifts

    Heavy lifting may be required

    Performs related duties as required

    Valid drivers license and clear driving record

    Must pass physical exam

    **Preferred Qualifications**

    Knowledge of mixing chemicals to prepare cleaning solutions, according to specifications

    Knowledge of using commercial cleaning equipment

    **Please Note:** Absent a qualifying exception for medical or religious reasons, newly hired employees of the New York Public Library must present proof of receipt of a COVID-19 vaccination and may not begin employment at the Library until 14 days after their receipt of their second dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines or 14 days after their first dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Newly hired employees who need additional time to receive their vaccination prior to their start date may request an adjournment of their start date with their hiring manager. The Library will consider such requests on a case by case basis, depending upon the Librarys operational needs, among other factors. The Library will further consider exemptions for prospective employees who cannot become vaccinated due to a qualifying medical condition or a sincerely held religious belief or practice. Candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment and who seek a medical or religious exemption to the Librarys vaccination policy will be provided with additional instructions at the time of the conditional offer.
