    Job Description Summary

    The College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science at Michigan Technological University invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor in Biometrics and Natural Resource Techniques (instructional track position). This position will be responsible for teaching classes in natural resource measurement and analysis, as well as natural resource economics and related disciplines. The appointment is for the 9-month academic year, with the opportunity for additional teaching during the summer.

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

    Teach undergraduate courses in natural resource analysis-related areas, including field techniques and methods, biometrics, forest biometrics and modellng, natural resource economics, and wildland fire. Additional teaching may include undergraduate and graduate courses in forest economics and undergraduate and graduate classes in statistics.

    Contribute to the development, implementation, and assessment of a curriculum that promotes inclusion and a sense of belonging in our academic programs.

    Participate in curriculum development and updates to ensure maintenance of SAF accreditation of forestry programs. Collaborate with others in the college to assist students in career advising, study skills, and time management. Serve on appropriate college and university committees, such as the college curriculum committee. Assist in program assessment and curriculum development. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work, including providing safety orientations to students participating in indoor and outdoor labs associated with courses taught.

    Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

    BS degree in forestry or related field
    PhD degree in natural resource management field

    Required Experience (minimum requirements)

    Experience using personal computers and basic software knowledge including Microsoft Office Suite.

    Desirable Education and/or Experience

    Demonstrated excellence in teaching.
    Knowledge of best practices related to teaching in STEM, sensitivity to variability in learning strategies among students, and commitment to supporting student success.
    Experience teaching including outdoor labs in forested ecosystems.
    A degree from a Society of American Foresters (SAF) accredited program. 2+ years of experience teaching at the college level as instructor of record.
    Experience using learning management systems such as Canvas as well as other online learning platforms.
    Experience teaching using synchronous or asynchronous video, recorded video or other hybrid teaching technologies.
    Experience using forest growth simulation models such as FVS.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

    Strong quantitative skills.
    Demonstrated strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
    Demonstrated ability to take the initiative to solve problems related to teaching, scheduling, logistics, etc.
    Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with faculty, staff, and students.
    Demonstrated ability to communicate across cultural boundaries, and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, staff, and faculty.

    Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

    The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting. Some teaching includes outdoor laboratories in fall, winter, and spring. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
