Job description

Behavioral Framework – the leading provider of ABA therapy to children diagnosed with autism in the DMV area – is looking for a Financial Counselor.

The Financial Counselor is responsible for assisting patients and their families with understanding and managing the financial aspects of healthcare services. This role provides education regarding insurance coverage, financial responsibility, payment options, and financial assistance programs. The Financial Counselor works collaboratively with families, insurance carriers, and internal departments to ensure accurate billing, timely collections, and a positive patient financial experience.

Responsibilities

  • Educate patients and families on insurance benefits, coverage limitations, deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket expenses.

  • Provide accurate cost estimates for services when applicable.

  • Own a portfolio of patient balances from first statement through resolution by working patient AR aging weekly (0–30/31–60/61–90/90+), document outcomes, and escalate trends.

  • Meet monthly goals for collection rate/aging reduction/payment plan compliance

  • Develop and manage individualized payment plans in accordance with organizational policies.

  • Monitor active financial agreements and follow up on delinquencies, including declined payments, expired credit cards, returned checks, and stopped payments.

  • Review patient accounts for accuracy and completeness prior to statement generation.

  • Generate and distribute monthly patient statements (or on demand as needed)

  • Screen, collect, and review documentation for financial assistance or waiver requests; escalate recommendations to leadership as appropriate.

  • Address and resolve billing questions, discrepancies, and disputes in a timely and professional manner.

  • Collaborate with internal revenue cycle teams to resolve account issues.

  • Maintain accurate, thorough, and timely documentation of all patient communications and account updates in the practice management system.

  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, organizational policies, and applicable federal and state regulations.

  • Confidentiality & Integrity: Maintains strict confidentiality of patient financial and health information.

  • Team Collaboration: Works effectively with cross-functional teams to achieve departmental goals.

Knowledge, Skills, Experience

  • High school/GED required; Bachelor's preferred.

  • Minimum of 1–3 years of experience in healthcare financial counseling, medical billing, or revenue cycle operations preferred.

  • Experience in behavioral health, ABA therapy, or similar outpatient services is strongly preferred.

  • Strong working knowledge of major payer systems, portals (e.g., Availity, Navinet, payer-specific portals).

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Work Environment, Physical Conditions

  • Primarily sedentary office work

  • Prolonged periods of sitting and computer use

  • Frequent telephone communication

  • Ability to maintain focus in a fast-paced environment

Salary: $55,000-$65,000
