    Jackson County is hiring a new team member to serve as an Equipment Mechanic II in our Fleet Services Division.

    Jackson County is simultaneously recruiting for two similar positions at the same time within the Roads Department.

    The titles of these recruitments are "Equipment Mechanic I" and "Equipment Mechanic II." Please note, we will only fill one of the above positions with the best candidate from the qualified applicant pools.


    This full-time position will be part of a 10-person crew and will assist in maintaining and repairing our fleet of over 500 units.

    Our team of well-trained and highly qualified technicians serve as partners to Jackson County departments to ensure that safe, reliable vehicles and equipment are available for County employees to serve the public.

    This is a journey-level, heavy equipment mechanic classification.

    The ideal candidate shall have expert knowledge of and advanced working proficiency in engine repair and maintenance, drivetrain and steering systems, hydraulic and electrical repair, air and hydraulic braking systems, and be able to perform line maintenance welding and fabrication.

    Work will be performed in a shop environment, or outside in all weather conditions.

    Part of the Equipment Mechanic II expectation is to act as a lead technician and help coach and mentor subordinate technicians.

    Occasional weekend work and overtime may be required.

    I. Position Summary


    Performs skilled and specialized electrical, machinist, maintenance and major mechanical repair to a variety of automobiles, trucks, machinery and equipment; and, performs skilled welding duties related to the design, fabrication, and repair of maintenance and construction equipment.

    Performs complex work with a significant level of specialized knowledge, abilities, skills and experience beyond that expected at the journey level; and, exercises technical and functional supervision over lower level positions

    II. Examples of Essential Position Duties (The following duties represent some of the principal job duties; however, they are not all-inclusive. Other duties may be required or assigned.)


    • Inspects and operates automotive and heavy equipment to diagnose defects; performs minor and major repairs and overhauls; provides work direction to other equipment mechanics.
    • Evaluates automotive and mechanic equipment and recommend repair work as necessary.
    • Diagnoses, repairs and replaces electrical systems and wiring, brake systems, cooling systems, clutches, transmissions, large gear boxes and differentials, hydraulic systems, steering systems, cooling systems, gas and diesel engines.
    • Consults service, maintenance and operator manuals and design diagrams for repairs and replacement of parts and operating systems; review service records, work orders, parts sheets, and equipment installation lists, blueprints and electrical diagrams.
    • Conducts pre and post trip inspection; completes inspection records and file.
    • Performs welding including sheet metal, hard surfacing, or repairing broken castings, using oxyacetylene or electrical arc welding equipment as required.
    • Designs and fabricates equipment components, attachments and accessories; mills and shapes components for fabrication or repair of equipment.
    • Inspects, removes and repairs tires; repairs and changes broom cores and grader blades.
    • May serve as shop foreperson in their absence.
    • Adheres to regulatory requirements, collective bargaining agreements, County and departmental policies and procedures, required trainings, as well as safe work practices.
    • Develops and maintains effective internal and external working relationships at all levels.
    • Has regular and reliable attendance. Overtime may be required.
    III. Minimum Requirements (Performance of the essential duties of this position includes the following requirements, physical demands and/or working conditions)

    Education and Experience


    • High school diploma or equivalent AND four years of experience as a journeyman mechanic, preferably including experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive or related equipment maintenance from an accredited school; OR
    • Any combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge, and ability required to perform the job.
    License, Certificate or Other

    Requires possession of a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record. Must obtain an Oregon Class "B" Commercial Driver's License within twelve months of date of hire. May be required to obtain a Crane Operators License and Bucket Truck Operators License.

    IV. Other Requirements

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


    Requires considerable knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of automotive diagnostics and methods and practices of repair; overhauling automotive and construction equipment; radiator maintenance and repair; diesel -powered equipment.

    Ability to make the most difficult and complex repairs of County equipment; read, understand and apply information obtained from a variety of written materials and sources including maintenance manuals, blueprints, electrical diagrams, vehicle maintenance and repair reports and records, work orders and related documents; inspect, diagnose, repair, remove, replace, design, fabricate and install a variety of automotive and equipment systems, parts, attachments, and accessories; knowledge of state and federal welding standards and the various methods and techniques of welding; use of machinists lathe, mill or shaper, steel cutting, bending, and forming equipment; follow oral and written instructions; perform assigned work in a safe manner; prepare and maintain reports, records, logs and lists associated with assigned work; fabricate parts and tools to meet specific equipment needs; use and operate a variety of diagnostic and other equipment, tools, vehicles, and heavy equipment, power and hand tools; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; use basic arithmetic to calculate angles and measure cuts, test equipment, determine ratios and tolerances and alignments, and calculate discounts; prioritize work to meet established deadlines; use a variety of supplies including sprays, lubricants, and abrasives and paints; operate office machines including answering machine, computer and peripheral equipment; and interpret and explain division policies and procedures as necessary.

    Physical Demands (Performance of the essential duties of this position includes the following physical demands)


    Requires the ability to exert a considerable amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects and to stoop, crouch, climb and lift in performance of manual labor; perceive color, odor, texture and sound; operate a variety of tools, equipment and vehicles used in performance of daily tasks; ability to work around electrical currents and/or hazardous materials in a safe manner; may be subject to uncomfortable working conditions including exposure to dust, noise, heat or cold; requires driving and operating a variety of automotive vehicles and construction equipment.

    Required to furnish and maintain a tool box and tool set through 3⁄4" drive.

    Working Conditions (Performance of the essential duties of this position includes the following working conditions)

    Incumbents are exposed to adverse weather, including extreme temperatures, rain, snow, sleet and hail.

    Incumbents are also exposed to dangerous or unpleasant conditions and substances, including noise, dust, heat, cold, humidity, hot oil, asphalt, chemicals, traffic hazards, biohazards noxious plants and wildlife.

    May include exposure to disruptive people.
