    SUMMARY:


    The Communications Officer assists with development and implementation of communications strategies to promote information dissemination for all Tribal programs and to increase community engagement with the programs and services of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe.

    This role is pivotal in assisting the Communications team with managing external and internal communications and Public Relations (PR), including social media and content creation.


    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

    • Assists with the development and implementation of strategic communications plans and strategies to support the goals and objectives of the Tribal Programs.
    • Assists with writing, editing, and content development for various channels including Tribal newsletter (Kawenniios), press releases, website content, social media posts, and other communication or marketing materials; responsible for distribution of the above.
    • Collaborates with all Tribal departments and programs to ensure consistent messaging and branding across all communication channels.
    • Responsible for the development and dissemination of staff announcements, electronic bulletin board slides, and community calendar announcements utilizing appropriate communication channels; including electronic mailing lists, traditional media outlets, assorted social media platforms, and exterior electronic signage.
    • Monitors media coverage and tracks communications metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of internal and external communications strategies daily on various platforms and outlets, and any social media posts and comments for distribution to the Communications Director to decide on dissemination and potential strategizing with the Chief of Staff, Council, Executive Director's Office, and/or their respective departments.
    • Assists with the creation of graphic design projects; including photography, newspaper advertisements, promotional materials, and development of radio commercials.
    • Assist with the coordination, creation, and scheduling of social media posts for tribal programs in an effective and timely manner, with attention to design.
    • Responsible for monitoring additional tribal social media platforms, including individual tribal programs, to share and assist in expanding outreach.
    • Assist with the coordination of Kawenniios newsletter bulk mailings on the established schedule, and special mailers, including the completion of all associated postal forms and distribution requirements.
    • Assists the communications team with the preparation, scheduling, and facilitation of tribal meetings, special meetings, and other community events and meetings as assigned.
    • Assists communications team in conducting traditional and online research.
    • Assists communications team in maintaining (uploading) tribal website and intranet site.
    • Assists communications team with submitting maintenance work orders and IT service requests as required.
    • Inputs departmental purchase orders and processes invoices/receiving reports, credit card vouchers, check requests, and subscription renewals as directed by the Communications Director.
    • Fills in for the Multimedia Manager and Communications Specialist as directed by the Communications Director.
    • Maintains, updates, and creates reports of the following:
    • Off-reservation mailing list;
    • Media contact list; and
    • Other lists/databases as required
    • Stay informed on Tribal matters and issues, community events, and political or legislative developments for potential communication initiatives with Tribal governments, its members, and the broader community.
    • Maintain confidentiality at all times, and keep confidential information within the room in which the conversation/information was relayed.
    • Promote a positive image of the Tribe; exhibit a courteous attitude/demeanor at all times, when interacting with staff and individuals.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
    There are no supervisory duties for this position.


    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    • Must have a strong understanding of the English language, grammar, punctuation, and syntax.
    • Must have a working knowledge of software programs such as Microsoft Office programs: Word, Excel, Outlook, plus Adobe InDesign and Photoshop.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Digital Media/Multimedia, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field plus 2 years working experience is preferred.
    • Associate degree/diploma from a college or university in Communications or Public Relations
    with (3) three years of relevant experience in a related position and/or

    • A combination of relevant education and experience.

    OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
    Strong oral and written communication skills required.

    • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, social media platforms, website content management systems, and other communication tools and software such as Adobe Suite.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build and maintain positive relationships with Tribal leaders, staff community members, and external stakeholders.
    • Knowledge of media relations, press release distribution, and crisis communication strategies.
    • Creative thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to execute strategies and communications plans with fluidity.
    • Highly organized and detail-oriented with the ability to manage tight deadlines and multiple tasks.

    REASONING ABILITY:


    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

    Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
