    Description of Work

    Salary Grade NC13 Salary range $46,817 - $81,930
    This position serves as one of the Materials and Tests Unit's seven Geomaterials Field Specialist (GFS) stationed across the state. Each GFS has an assigned geographical area that they oversee. Each of their respective areas assigned consists of two NCDOT Divisions.
    This position aids the GeoMaterials Field Supervisor in logistics of scheduling and presenting the various training classes Materials and Tests is responsible for. This position will perform internal audits, inventory and standardize testing equipment, and provide specialized training to state personnel and contractors to enhance development, efficiency, and consistency in the testing of geomaterials used for highway construction. This position is responsible for ensuring authorized users are meeting rules and regulations stated in the Radioactive Materials Licensure program which includes controlling use and transportation of portable nuclear density gauges. This position investigates materials-related unsatisfactory test results and assessments which are disputed. This position will aid in responding to project audits initiated by the N.C. Office of the State Auditor. As needed, this position will assist with research to evaluate new products or methods. Work will be on NCDOT projects and at training facilities throughout North Carolina.
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

    • Demonstrated ability conveying technical instruction concepts and instruction techniques to training staff, including analyzing staff competency in using these techniques with students
    • Demonstrated ability analyzing findings and using sound judgment when recommending corrective actions based on materials investigations, technician assessments, and project audits
    • Demonstrated ability assessing proficiency of technicians to ensure compliance with established testing and inspection methods in both classroom and field inspection environments
    • Demonstrated ability communicating effectively with various internal and external customers related to inspection, sampling, testing, and certification
    • Experience with computer software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Databases)
    Additional Expectations:

    Knowledge, experience and certification in sampling and testing asphalt, aggregate, concrete and soils materials used in highway construction is preferred. Knowledge and experience with HiCAMS database is preferred. Ability to safely navigate hazardous work situations at highway construction projects and material/product stockpiles while following established in-house safety procedures is required.

    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

    Associate's degree in an applicable area of engineering technology from an appropriately accredited institution and six years of progressive technician experience; or High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and eight years of progressive technician experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
