    Description


    We are seeking a high achieving mid-career professional with an entrepreneurial spirit and a passion for effective lab workflow and lab safety to be the EH&S and Lab Operations Manager at our 6 Tide Street location.

    Working with our laboratory associate team, Site Director, and our Strategic Director EHS, you will partner with our clients to uncover and address laboratory management and environmental, health, and safety needs.

    You must be highly self-motivated, always professional, and able to prioritize your workload in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.

    Things change fast and frequently here, so we need someone at the top of their game who can shift gears, change directions, and keep going at pace.

    You have to be a smart, strategic thinker and a tactical executer.

    EH&S expertise, deep knowledge of bio tech and chemistry labs, along with general business savvy, all come into play here and you will use them every day.


    Responsibilities for this role include:

    Client Partnership:

    • Develop relationships with client labs and act as a trusted advisor.
    • Speak with clients and generate ideas for ways that SmartLabs can improve efficiency and productivity in their laboratory operations.
    • Work with the Associate Director of Lab Operations to plan and execute new service offerings, or expand existing offerings, to address client needs.

    Leadership:

    • Act as a SmartLabs Ambassador, demonstrating the value of The SmartLabs Way in everything you do.
    • Partner with the corporate team to identify and present industry advances in an educational format to our clients at your site.
    • Manage the Lab Associates assigned to your property.
    • Mentor and guide SmartLabs team members as they grow and learn.

    EH&S and Lab Operations:

    • Manage all general laboratory operations necessary to keep labs at your site running safely and efficiently, including waste consolidation and removal, gas tank exchanges, tissue culture room maintenance, hazardous waste disposal, etc.
    • Oversee lab equipment purchases, including price negotiation and installation.
    • Coordinate and ensure proper maintenance, repair, calibration, and certification of lab equipment. Schedule all preventative maintenance for equipment. If equipment breaks, schedule repairs quickly.
    • Train all clients on existing and new technologies both when they join our community and as needed.
    • Ensure full compliance with Environmental Health and Safety programs and regulations.
    • Ensure all equipment databases and other documentation (including inventory and list of Safety Data Sheets of hazardous, corrosive or flammable chemicals that enter the facility) are up-to-date.
    • Participate in the investigation of incidents, near misses and property damage incidents. Ensure follow up is done to minimize future exposure and proper record/documents are maintained.

    Professional qualifications include:

    • You have a track record of success building and maintaining effective and safe lab environments in a growing company, with a strong understanding of the processes, equipment and requirements needed in a research organization, both for molecular biology and chemistry labs.
    • You have experience implementing site health and safety programs and in taking necessary steps to ensure a safe work environment for all employees.
    • Life Sciences degree; BS in Biology or Chemistry preferred
    • 4 to 6 years of laboratory and EHS management experience
    • Knowledge of hazardous waste disposal practices
    • Has DOT, RCRA certification
    • Knowledge of OSHA, DEP, EPA, RCRA, DOT, DPH, MWRA, NIH, or NFPA, and other laboratory regulations/guidelines
    • Intermediate level Microsoft Office skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, at all levels and cross-functionally.
    • Ability to learn new tools and applications when and where needed.
