    General Summary:

    As part of the Facilities Operations division, the Chief engineer manages all engineering and facility maintenance department operations including physical plant, general condition of structure and appearance of facility, and maintenance and required certifications of HVAC and life safety systems.

    To deliver on the Audubon mission, the Chief Engineer will:

    Provide a guest experience of outstanding quality

    • Oversee the implementation of all property and equipment repairs and preventative maintenance programs.
    • Monitor and maintain life safety systems.
    • Solicit and implement of maintenance agreements for various systems and equipment.
    • Assist with the training of new employees.
    • Maintain, review for accuracy daily equipment rounds and daily logs performed by staff.
    • Take required continuing education classes.
    • Make regular walk throughs of facility to inspect general conditions to provide a quality presentation to our guests
    • Ability to perform and provide training for basic maintenance items for facility. Including but not limited to basic plumbing, painting, basic carpentry, and common building maintenance practices.
    Operate a financially self-sufficient collection of museums and parks

    • Create weekly departmental employee schedules- maintaining 24-hour coverage of building while limiting unnecessary overtime.
    • Monitor preventative maintenance, as well as repair all pumps and motors and keep records of any preventative maintenance and repairs made.
    • Will monitor and oversee any repairs made to the fire alarm and suppression systems and be responsible for scheduling and monitoring all testing and certifications of the fire alarm and suppression systems.
    • Chief engineer is responsible for training of staff in proper utilization and operation of Fire Alarm and suppression systems.
    Enhance the care and survival of wildlife through research and conservation

    • Working with Animal care department- will Maintain and monitor all life support systems and automation equipment.
    • Working with Electrical, Operations and Animal care departments- will Maintain all pumps, motors and life support systems
    • Building HVAC and Automation systems- will keep records of any changes in set points, repairs to the systems, as well as any changes in the programming.
    • Building HVAC and automation systems- will maintain a clear understanding of operation of systems and provide training to department to assure seamless operation of facility on a 24-hour basis.
    • Maintain the emergency generators and keep detailed records of maintenance performed in house or via maintenance agreement.

    • Develop and implement regular departmental training programs
    • Maintain HVAC systems at remote locations and maintain and monitor all HVAC systems throughout the building Keep records of all repairs made to the HVAC systems.
    • Remain educated on the proper use of any chemicals used within the department and for the use of SDS information and what to do in case of a chemical emergency.
    • Use proper PPE; this will include but not limit itself to proper eye protection, proper gloves when using chemicals, ear protection, etc.
    • Chief engineer is responsible to assure their staff is trained in proper use of chemicals, SDS, and PPE
    • Participate with safety classes within the department and throughout Audubon Nature Institute.

    Supervision:
    Engineering and maintenance staff – team of 12

    Experience:

    Required:
    o 5 years experience as a Stationary Engineer
    o 2 years experience in staff or office supervision
    o Proven experience in automated controls, centrifugal pumps, electrical and associated equipment
    o Ability to handle administration details and reports
    o Ability to establish and maintain effective, efficient and cooperative relationships with employees, senior administration and vendors

    o Chief engineer is REQUIRED to be part of the "Storm Rider" team, remaining in the facility with other team members during a major weather event to assure the safety and well being of our animal collection and fellow team members.


    Preferred:
    o Experience in systems operations implementation
    o Previous engineering experience in a commercial building or building organization
    o Management experience including budgeting, expense control, and payroll

    Education:
    high school diploma; Bachelors preferred.

    Licensure/Certification:

    1st class Engineering License with the City of New Orleans, A/C and Boilers

    Software Requirements:
    Proficiency in basic Microsoft Office programs, Word, Excel, Outlook
    Machinery/Tools/Equipment

    Requirements:

    Must have the ability to use mobile devices, computer, scanner, phone, and copy machine, basic hand and power tools.


    Physical Requirements:

    Very heavy work:

    exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.


    • Will involve walking or standing majority of time.
    • Sitting or standing, bending, stooping, and the ability to carry items weighing up to 75 pounds.
    • Regular near acuity with clarity of vision at 20 inches or less required.
    • Typical ability to collect and analyze numerical and written data and verbal information to reach logical conclusions and ability to determine the time, place and sequence of operations or actions required.
    • Regular talking and the ability to express and exchange ideas by means of language expected.
    • Regular hearing and the ability to perceive the nature of sounds.
    • Constant ability to read, record, or type data quickly and accurately required

    • May be exposed to high, medium, or low noise intensity.

    • Exposure to outdoor conditions may be required.
    • Will be required to remain at the facility during a natural disaster or emergency situation, as this position is designated storm rider.
