    SSG-Project 180 turns lives around through innovative, wraparound services that keep people out of institutions and in their communities.

    Project 180 is a leader in the forensic treatment space, offering high-quality, specialized treatment programs that serve thousands of justice-involved individuals.

    Our programs span criminal justice intercepts and include pre-arrest interventions, court-based diversions, jail in-reach, and intensive post-release services.

    Project 180 operates in partnership with County agencies including the Department of Mental Health (DMH), the Department of Health Services (DHS), and the Justice, Care and Opportunities Department (JCOD).

    Annually, we serve over justice-involved 1,500 individuals.

    Position Summary


    Project 180 (P180) seeks an experienced people and culture leader to serve as our first Senior Director of People and Culture to develop the strategy and infrastructure for all P180 people matters.

    The Senior Director will lead the vision and execution of systems related to hiring and talent pipelines, training and performance management, employee relations and culture, and organizational and compensation design.

    The ideal candidate for this role will be committed to reducing justice involvement within Los Angeles County through community-based mental health programs.

    They will bring a strong employee relations background and will have an entrepreneurial spirit as they design and lead Project 180's inaugural people team.


    P180 is housed within the nonprofit Special Service for Groups (SSG), which oversees and implements all administrative aspects of HR on behalf of P180.

    This position reports to the P180 Director and works closely with individuals at all levels of the organization, as well as with the HR team at SSG, outside consultants and vendors.

    The Senior Director of People of Culture will hire and supervise two to three talent team members.

    Essential Functions

    Employee Relations and Culture

    Design and oversee employee culture, engagement, DEI, recognition, communication, and retention strategies
    Lead all employee relations, including policy development and management & decision-making around conflicts, disputes, discipline, investigations, and terminations
    Serve as the expert and provide advice, counsel and supports to managers regarding employee practices, policies, and staff discipline
    Develop P180-specific employee relations policies (e.g., remote work)
    Conduct exit interviews, synthesize findings, and develop strategies in response

    Hiring and Talent Pipeline

    Work with P180 leadership and program leaders to define annual hiring and recruiting plans aligned with organizational goals, designed to attract and retain skilled, diverse staff
    Lead a team to design hiring protocols, guidelines, and best practice interview processes
    Oversee maintenance of job descriptions and management of hiring processes
    Ensure roles are posted and candidates are effectively sourced, recruited, and screened
    Oversee new hire communication and orientation
    Design career progression strategy for P180
    Monitor data to make continuous improvements to talent and hiring processes

    Training and Performance Management

    Design a performance management system and tools to complement SSG's, aligned with P180's values and approach
    Curate trainings, resources, and best practice for talent-related functions (e.g., hiring, managing)
    Develop and oversee the structures for professional development

    Organizational And Compensation Design

    Design a comprehensive talent strategy for P180, including annual planning, forecasting and key metrics
    Collaborate with P180 leadership to design organizational structure, positions and other fundamental people design matters
    Design an aligned compensation structure, including titles and bands
    Oversee & manage time off policies

    Supervision and Collaboration

    Design and hire the people and culture team, supervising members and actively supporting their growth and development aligned to their goals and organizational objectives
    Liaise directly with HR team at SSG around their implementation of all administrative aspects of HR on behalf of P180 (e.g., new hire paperwork, employee handbook, payroll & timesheets, leaves of absence, benefits, compliance, HRIS)

    Skills And Abilities

    Track record of building and/or improving people and culture systems, policies and practices, with the ability to both set vision and then execute
    Commitment to building a people and culture function that is grounded in equity, creates an inclusive workplace, and uplifts the voices and experiences of P180 staff and those we serve
    Demonstrated experience mediating and/or resolving complex employee relations matters aligned with culture and values; outstanding judgment and high discretion
    Strong managerial and coaching skills, with the ability to provide direct feedback and coach and develop leaders to become more effective in their roles
    Technical understanding of talent functions, including but not limited to recruiting/hiring/onboarding, employment law (familiarity with California preferred), performance management and compensation
    Strategic thinker and problem-solver experienced in change management
    Excellent communication skills with demonstrated ability to speak and write clearly and persuasively across all levels of the organization
    Strong organizational/time management/follow-through skills and demonstrated ability to work independently, multitask, set and drive priorities, monitor progress towards goals, and utilize data

    Minimum Qualifications


    Required:
    Bachelor's Degree

    Required: 6-8 years experience in people/talent operations or management, with at least 2 years of supervisory experience

    Preferred:
    PHR/SPHR certificate, graduate degree in business, HR/Organizational Development, or related field

    Preferred:
    Experience in a mission-driven organization with a diverse staff

    Compensation & Benefits

    The salary range for this position is $130,000 - $160,000, depending on experience

    Supervisory Responsibilities

    Senior Director will directly manage a team of approximately 2-3 talent generalists.

    Environmental Conditions (Working Conditions)


    The Senior Director will be based in the Project 180 headquarters office in downtown Los Angeles and will need to perform job duties across sites.

    This role is eligible for some remote work days days per week) but most work days will be on-site in Los Angeles.

    Physical Requirements


    The employee is expected to drive or have another mode of transportation between the office and sites, listen, and speak in order to complete job requirements.
