    About the Navy Submarine Electronics Specialist Role

    The most secretive and technologically advanced of all Navy vessels, a submarine requires a select community of specially trained professionals to operate its highly classified hardware.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Operate, test, and maintain submarine combat control systems, participating in weapons handling functions.
    • Maintain non-tactical computer systems and peripherals, responsible for a vast array of sophisticated weaponry including torpedoes, Tomahawk cruise missiles, and nuclear ballistic missiles.
    • Specialize in underwater acoustic technologies, operating a submarine's sonar, oceanographic equipment, and auxiliary sonar to conduct underwater surveillance, collect scientific data, and track enemy targets.
    • Perform maintenance on highly sensitive and classified sonar hardware.
    • Install, administer, and maintain onboard communications and navigation systems, focusing on radio communication equipment, systems, and programs.

    Work Environment:

    Serving as a Navy Submarine electronics specialist may involve time at sea or ashore, operating and repairing systems and equipment on Navy submarines at undisclosed locations. Deployments can last several months, with little to no time spent on the surface.

    Training & Advancement:

    Initial training begins with 7–9 week Recruit Training (Boot Camp), followed by Basic Enlisted Submarine School for 4 weeks of instruction in basic submarine systems. Formal Navy schooling is then received in specialty areas, covering topics such as electricity, electronics, computers, digital systems, fiber optics, and electronics repair.

    Education Opportunities:

    • Navy technical and operational training can translate to credit hours toward a bachelor's or associate degree through the American Council on Education.
    • Continue education through opportunities like Navy College Program and Tuition Assistance, Post-9/11 GI Bill.

    Qualifications & Requirements:

    A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Applicants must be U.S. citizens who can meet eligibility requirements for a security clearance.
