- Sampling of environmental media such as soils, attic dust, indoor dust, etc.
- Maintain proper documentation and chain of custody associated with environmental media samples prior to laboratory analysis.
- Packaging and preparation of samples for shipment to a laboratory for analysis.
- Performs inspections and assessments of properties associated with the Residential Metals Abatement Program.
- Compiles field notes and submits reports as required.
- Performs public relations functions as necessary at job sites.
- Maintains field equipment and ensures tools and equipment remain in good repair.
- Perform all duties and work assignments in a safe, healthy, and environmentally sound manner. Specifically, complying with the Health & Safety Program; maintaining work areas in a safe and orderly manner; identifying and reporting unsafe conditions; reporting all accidents; wearing required personal protective equipment; and attending safety-related meetings, training sessions, fit testing, etc.
- Performing related work as required.
- Basic knowledge of environmental sciences and environmental public health principles.
- Knowledge of data collection, analysis, and interpretation techniques.
- Basic knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
- Knowledge of safety procedures for handling hazardous materials.
- Knowledge of valid sample collection procedures and protocol.
- Ability to read map products and site plans to plan for sample collection.
- Demonstrates ability to execute basic mathematical calculations.
- Demonstrates ability to interpret and apply regulations.
- Knowledge of conflict resolution techniques and their applications.
- Demonstrates ability to work independently and in teams.
- Demonstrates basic knowledge and use of computerized data management systems.
- Ability to operate a personal computer using standard word processing, spreadsheet and database and design applications appropriate to assigned duties.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and use of field equipment.
- Ability to communicate well with others both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language.
- Ability to use logical thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and oral instructions.
- Enrolled in a college or university of recognized standing with a bachelor's degree in environmental engineering, occupational safety and health, environmental science or a closely related field.
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.
- Must be a resident of Butte-Silver Bow during employment, according to Butte-Silver Bow Ordinance
- Sufficient personal mobility, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to lift 10 pounds and walk for an 8-hour continuous shift;
- Sufficient vision with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to read and view planting conditions;

General Statement of Duties
The Reclamation and Environmental Services Sampling Intern performs a wide variety of environmental sampling and field inspections associated with the Department of Reclamation and Environmental Services; does related work as required.
This position is expected to run from May to September, 2024.Distinguishing Features of the Class
This is responsible, skilled, technical work involving specific job duties and responsibilities.
Work is performed under the general direction and supervision of the Director of the Reclamation and Environmental Services, but leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative.
The nature of the work performed requires an employee in this class to establish and maintain close cooperative working relationships with Department of Reclamation staff, Butte-Silver Bow department employees, regulatory and compliance agencies, business owners and operators, homeowners, and the general publicDuties/Responsibilities

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Required:
A valid Montana driver's license, current certificate of vehicle insurance, and access to reliable transportation to all assigned work locations.
Preferred:
Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response 40-hour Certification, certification to be provided upon hire if not previously acquired.
