    Department Overview


    The Nursing Director for OHSU Health Heart and Vascular Service Line (ND HVSL) is responsible for directing, organizing, monitoring and improving service line activities at OHSU Healthcare to ensure seamless patient management along the continuum of care.

    The ND HVSL is a Registered Nurse (RN) responsible for upholding excellence in the provision of nursing care through the implementation of the Professional Practice Model.

    The SOD utilizes professional practice as the foundation for leading nursing practice.

    The ND HVSL ensures the provision of safe high quality patient/family-centered care, provides leadership development, implementation and evaluation of strategies and services and assures interdisciplinary collaboration among staff and leadership.


    The ND HVSL is responsible for fiscal oversight, forecasting capital and operational expenses for the Heart and Vascular service line at OHSU and works collaboratively with HVSL/Strategy Department partners on creation and oversight of the annual service line budget, forecasting capital and operational expenses at the system level.

    The position supports maintenance of a competitive position in the cardiovascular marketplace.

    As such, the ND HVSL works collaboratively with clinical chairs, medical directors, administrative leadership, health system leaders, and community partners to develop and execute tactics consistent with the OHSU Health Strategic Plan.

    Additionally the ND HVSL will partner with service line leaders on developing and executing strategic planning for cardiovascular-related programs within OHSU Health System to ensure system-wide strategy and vision.


    The ND HVSL holds responsibility for operational oversight associated with the KCVI Cardiology Clinic, Ventricular Assist Device Program and Non-Invasive Cardiology Services.

    Additionally, the ND HVSL oversees the advance practice providers responsible for Adult Congenital and Heart Failure programs and the Registered Nurses responsible Cardiac Stress Testing and the Cardiac Ischemia program.

    Function/Duties of Position

    Operational Leadership


    • Drive operational performance initiatives.
    Direct the analysis and create the understanding off key operational and financial outcomes including:
    ALOS, case mix, ambulatory utilization, cost per case, inpatient volumes etc., to recognize trends, evaluate status, and in concert with physicians make decisions and organize interventions

    • Provides leadership in the coordination of service line meetings, working with clinical leaders, medical directors and members to develop agendas.
    • Partners with others to enhance healthcare and, ultimately patient care through interdisciplinary activities, such as education, consultation, management, technological development, or research opportunities
    • Applies systems theory with an understanding that how parts of a system relate to the overall system
    • Leads and practices patient/family advocacy and promotes patient-centered decisions and outcomes
    • Maintains visibility and open communication with the staff and department leadership
    • Communicates plans and decisions to department staff and other stakeholders
    • Ensures the care environment supports the provision of safe quality care, and a work place that promotes shared decision-making, accountability, autonomy and engagement
    • Reflects on own method of decision-making and the role of beliefs, values and inferences to develop leadership and performance capacity
    • Practices within shared-governance structures to distribute leadership and promote decision-making appropriate level within the governance structure

    Performance Improvement


    • Develops the service line quality plan in collaboration with Quality Management department and organizational leaders
    • Oversees all regulatory activity associated with Hospital accreditation and program certifications
    • Drives clinical performance initiatives. Review, monitor, and analyze monthly and quarterly reports to recognize trends, evaluate status, and in concert with physician co-leaders, makes decisions and organize interventions
    • Evaluates the practice environment and designs and implements quality improvement strategies to ensure nursing sensitive outcomes meets or exceeds established goals
    • Evaluates the impact/benefits of system, organizational, nursing, and department initiatives
    • Supports workflow processes that builds a culture of safety
    • Uses current research findings and other evidence to expand clinical knowledge, enhance role performance, and increase knowledge of professional issues
    Service Line Direction & Strategic Planning


    • Achieves performance objectives and influences decision making and action through matrix relationships
    • Under the guidance of OHSU Health Heart and Vascular Service Line executive sponsors, and in collaboration with the Strategy department, Medical and Surgical Directors, partner to define strategic business focus, i.e. growth, maintenance or curtailment of activities as appropriate, using integrated information about customer(s), market(s) and competitors to recognize and recommend initiatives that align with OHSU Strategic Plan
    • Work with Strategy department and OHSU Health System Partners on strategic vision and operational planning in relationship to cardiovascular programs across the health system
    • Builds and manages relationships with outside organizations that are beneficial in executing service line business and strategy, including those that add value to OHSU's reputation at the regional and national level.
    • Collaborates with other OHSU affiliates and health systems on an as-needed basis to grow and support cardiovascular services within the state and regionally
    • Partners on the development of tactics to achieve goals and strategies. Direct the execution of tactics to meet or exceed performance objectives of Heart and Vascular Service Line
    • Recognizes linkages to institutional initiatives and incorporate those implications when solving problems and making decisions
    • Actively participate in physician recruitment and retention strategies
    • Identify capital funding required to support strategic initiatives and work with peers to prioritize and approve submissions
    • Collaborate with outside partners as business and clinical opportunities may arise

    • Develops innovative solutions and applies strategies to obtain appropriate resources for nursing

    Required Qualifications


    • Master's degree or higher in nursing or related field
    • Minimum 10 years' experience in nursing leadership.
    • Professional certification in nursing leadership-e.g. Nurse Executive/Administrator
    • Unencumbered Oregon RN license BLS for healthcare provider
    • Demonstrated ability to elicit high levels of performance from employees at all levels in the organization and stakeholders from a variety of external sources
    • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and execute moderately complex business plans
    • Demonstrated financial analysis and fiscal management skills
    • Effective communication, and the ability to successfully manage interpersonal relationships in high stress, fast paced environment
    • Experience that demonstrates the ability to successfully work in partnership with physicians
    • Experience that demonstrates the ability to meet stringent deadlines in a dynamic environment
    • Must have proven skills in project management and matrix management
    • Demonstrates skill in problem solving
    • Exceptional interpersonal communication skills
