    Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant Schedule:
    • 8:30am to 5:00pm Monday through Friday
    Objective: To provide quality ongoing therapy to all patients within the facility per physician's orders.
    Communicate on an ongoing basis with therapist, residents and staff, the progress of such designed
    programs. The Assistant assists the therapist with resident/patient related activities and direct
    resident/patient care. The Assistant keeps department records as per facility policy.

    Required Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each
    essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or

    1. Graduate from a Therapy Assistant accredited curriculum. Eligible for certification and/or licensure
    per state regulations.
    2. Is a registered assistant the state of employment or is eligible for registration in the state of employment.
    3. Ability to understand medical terminology and how it applies to Therapy in order to communicate with
    residents, staff and physicians, and to prepare meaningful reports.
    4. Coordination and dexterity necessary to manipulate tools and materials while instructing residents.
    5. Adequate strength and endurance to meet the physical demands involved in using equipment, tools,
    and materials while instructing residents.
    7. Verbal and written ability is necessary to understand oral and written instructions; to communicate with
    residents, staff and family; and to prepare reports as directed by the Registered Therapist.
    8. Motor coordination, manual and finger dexterity are necessary to coordinate movements of eyes, hands
    and fingers and to manipulate materials while instructing residents.
    9. Spatial and form perception are necessary to visualize shapes, patterns and other pertinent details in
    specifications and pictures.
    10. Ability to undertake a variety of changing duties as required by many different projects.
    11. Ability to work under specific instructions as to the scope of a project, but to use initiative and judgment
    in adapting project to patient.
    12. Ability to observe all necessary precautions in the use of equipment to prevent injury to resident or staff.
    13. Be willing to work weekends and holidays, as needed, on a rotational basis.
    14. Be willing to travel and work at other VOA facilities, as needed.
    15. Maintain productivity standards as directed by supervisor.
    16. Ability to utilize computers and other electronic devices for tasks such as timekeeping, in-servicing and
    documentation.
    17. Able to meet the requirements identified in the Essential Function

    Essential Functions: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform

    1. Performs therapy treatment and related duties delegated by the therapist.
    a. Performs therapy treatment in a safe and professional manner.
    b. Maintains clinical skill competencies.
    c. Respond promptly to acute changes in the patient's physiological state, report changes to therapist
    and record pertinent changes.
    d. Modify treatment techniques in conference with therapist.
    e. Teach patients, their families and other health care providers to perform selected treatment
    procedures and functional activities.
    f. Directly assist the therapist in performing complex evaluations and/or treatment procedures.
    2. Provides Therapy to the residents upon written order of the residents' attending physician and
    specifically:
    a. Communicates a report on the residents' progress to the therapist and attending physician.
    b. Consults with the therapist and the physician regarding residents' change of condition as
    indicated during the course of treatment.
    c. Assists with re-evaluation of the resident in conjunction with the therapist and attending
    physician.
    3. Prepares and maintains timely treatment records with progress notes and observations including:
    a. Physician's Orders.
    b. Objectives of Treatment.
    c. Plan of care.
    d. Treatment procedure(s) and baseline clinical data.
    e. Assessment of progress and resident's response to treatment.
    f. Other pertinent information as required by the facility's policies.
    4. Assists with planning, scheduling, mailing, transporting, filing of documents, and coordinating of
    Therapy services offered by the department.
    5. Participates in resident care planning conferences when needed to coordinate the care of the resident.
    6. Participates and provides services for Restorative Nursing Program.
    7. Conducts or participates in continuing education programs for facility staff as coordinated by the
    Education Director; i.e. new staff orientation, Relias.
    8. Provides teaching and training to the resident or family.
    9. Ensures that Therapy services are provided on a continuous basis, without interruption. This involves
    informing the supervisor of upcoming vacations, leave of absences, or other reasons when a
    replacement therapist may be needed.
    10. Assists with supervision of maintenance of equipment and supplies, and evaluates and notifies the
    Department Head on a continuing basis of the condition of the Department's equipment.
    11. Recommends to the Department Head purchases or repairs of department equipment.
    12. Assists with management of department inventory control program.
    13. Enforces customer service principles and may be asked to be a member of ongoing committees.
    14. Performs other duties or special assignments as directed by the Department Head.
    15. Assists with coordinating the Therapy program with other rehabilitative services the resident is receiving.
    16. Responsible for documentation of treatment notes for assigned residents.
    17. Assists in the monthly billing process as assigned and supervised by the Therapist.
    18. Abides by regulations pertaining to the facility as established by Federal and State agencies and Volunteers
    of America National Services policies.
    19. Assists with the department's infection control and safety programs as directed by the Therapist.
    20. Understands facility fire and disaster plans and safety programs. Follows established procedures.
    21. Attends required in-services & completes assigned online modules.
    22. Performs other department duties or special assignments as directed by the Therapist.
