    Job Title

    School At Risk Youth Peer Support Specialist

    This is a full-time position working 40 hours per week, 12 months a year. The role will be based out of the Heartland South Sioux City office and serve the South Sioux City, NE schools.

    Main Function

    The School At Risk Youth Peer Support Specialist will work with students who have had direct experience with mental health services to help them achieve their goals. This includes collaborating with mental health providers and youth to develop self-advocacy skills and cultural specific life plans.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Meet regularly with students to build relationships and connections to school.

    Assist students in developing post-secondary plans and taking necessary steps to achieve them.

    Monitor attendance and graduation progress of students.

    Connect students with resources such as academic, social/emotional, financial, etc.

    Provide transportation to school as needed.

    Work closely with school-based therapists to coordinate and enroll students in mental health services.

    Meet with parents to complete documentation for mental health services.

    Facilitate small groups in the school setting.

    Build rapport and connect with youth by sharing common experiences and modeling resilience and recovery.

    Support youth involved with DHHS, education system, and other services.

    Help youth understand components of recovery and resiliency and apply skills to achieve life goals.

    Provide individualized support to peers according to their plan, focusing on choice and building confidence leading to independence.

    Work effectively with diverse populations.

    Attend case meetings and other relevant meetings.

    Locate resources and training opportunities to help individuals achieve their goals.

    Be available as a resource for youth during scheduled appointments or designated drop-in hours.

    Travel is required.

    Requirements

    Participate in required trainings and become certified within one year of employment.

    Communicate promptly and report any concerns when working with youth.

    Maintain healthy boundaries with youth to promote accountability and independence while offering support.

    Qualifications

    A minimum of an AA degree is required.

    Direct experience with mental health and/or substance use services is necessary to ensure services are driven by the youth.

    State of Nebraska Peer Support Specialist Certification is preferred but must be obtained within one year of employment.

    Criminal and transportation background checks are required, along with a valid driver's license.

    Bilingual in Somali, Oromo, or Swahili and English is preferred.
