The Opportunity:
Shelter Services Manager
The Humane Society of Boulder Valley (HSBV) is seeking a Shelter Services Manager to oversee the daily operations of the animal shelter's programs for client support, adoptions, intake, and emergency preparedness and response.
The manager develops and implements the programs in alignment and compliance with positive reinforcement training methods, and HSBV's open admission and open adoption philosophies.
The shelter services manager establishes and trains best practices for client service to enhance community relations and promote HSBV as the service provider of choice.
The manager is responsible for assessing and evaluating shelter operations, and shares the responsibility for identifying opportunities, implementing procedures, and the overall effectiveness of operations with the shelter operations manager and the behavior and health manager.
The service manager directly reports to the director of shelter services and directly supervises the client care supervisor, the client care coordinator, and indirectly supervises the adoption specialists.

Summary of responsibilities include but are not limited to:Participates in leadership meetings, strategic planning, and emergency preparedness. Works directly with the director of shelter services to identify long term goals; ensures departmental goals are achieved.
Leads the coordination of the shelter's emergency response Actively participates in disaster and emergency planning. The Shelter Services Manager is considered essential personnel during emergency responses.
Establishes client service best practices designed to address client service trends or changes in resource needs; aligns procedural updates and operational improvements with client service values.
Works directly with the behavior and health manager and director of shelter services when addressing behavior needs of shelter animals and rehabilitation implementation.
Identifies skill gaps and addresses training needs. Prepares, updates, and develops content for employee training and ongoing professional growth.
Promotes a safe work environment by conducting safety training, complying with OSHA safety rules, and investigating incidents to reduce or eliminate risk.
Maintains departmental records. Maintains shelter statistics, prepares monthly statistical reports on organizational progress, and creates computer reports as assigned.
Ensures the public's access to shelter information by working with HSBV's IT support provider to maintain phone and computer systems within the shelter department.
Ensures department and program operations are compliant with the Colorado Pet Animal Care and Facilities Act (PACFA) and other applicable state and local animal care and sheltering requirements.

Qualifications
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree desired, preferably in psychology, biology, or other science-based field; experience in animal sheltering or behavior preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Minimum two (2) years' experience in a supervisory role. Must possess a Colorado driver's license with an insurable driving record. Must be certified to perform euthanasia or willing to attain certification within one month of hire. Must be trained as a Qualified Injury and Accident Investigator or be trained within two months of being hired. Certification in animal training and behavior counseling a plus.
Knowledge and Skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, customer service skills, and interpersonal skills. Strong knowledge of animal health, care, and welfare. Effective, preferably fear-free, animal handling skills. Able to exercise good judgment when addressing personnel, client, animal, or management issues. Ability to initiate projects, accomplish multiple tasks, and maintain flexibility in a dynamic work environment. Demonstrated organizational planning skills.
Mental, Physical, and Communication Demands
Requires working alone or with minimal supervision. Requires working under pressure in public view.
Requires patience and tact when working with difficult, emotional, or angry people.
Requires the ability to create detailed, correct, and written materials.
Requires alertness and great attention to detail with animal handling and human relations.
Requires sitting at a desk for periods up to four hours without break when working on written reports or meetings.
Requires speaking and writing effectively and clearly in a professional manner individually and to groups.Requires intermediate computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, email, shelter software and virtual meeting software. Requires ability to assess service needs and delegate resources to meet those needs. Requires handling people and animals in a courteous and professional manner.
Work Conditions
Work environment is divided between an animal kennel environment and a shared office environment. Work shifts are typically 8 hours spent sitting at a desk, using a telephone and computer regularly. Regular exposure to animals; potentially subject to animal bites and scratches, zoonotic diseases, and cleaning agents. Frequent walking, standing, bending, and squatting. Occasional need to climb or balance, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Daily lifting up to 10 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 40 pounds with assistance.
What We Offer :
The anticipated salary range for this position is $58,000 – $65,000 per year.
This salary range is the Humane Society of Boulder Valley's best estimate for this position and actual compensation will be based on factors including but not limited to the depth and extent of relevant experience, education, and additional training/certifications for preferred skills.
