    Critical Needs Counselor/Therapist (Licensed) - University Counseling Center

    Job Summary

    As a member of the University Counseling Center team, the Critical Needs Counselor is responsible for the assessment and delivery of mental health services on an outpatient basis to students with varying emotional and psychological concerns. The Critical Needs Counselor also provides consultation, prevention services, crisis intervention and outreach support to faculty, staff and student organizations. In addition to the above, the Critical Needs Counselor will maintain communication with other university offices and community providers, as appropriate, to coordinate student mental health care.

    Job Responsibilities
    • Conduct phone, in-person and/or virtual triage and initial consultation and intake assessment appointments.
    • Provide in-person and/or virtual psychotherapy/counseling services for students as individuals, couples and/or in groups.
    • Offer crisis intervention services to students with clinical emergencies as well as drop-in crisis hours for risk assessment, safety planning, and supportive counseling.
    • Attend Behavioral Intervention and Threat Assessment Team meetings.
    • Review student incident reports and alert assigned counselors as appropriate.
    • Liaise with Dean of Students and Office of Student Responsibility and Community Standards regarding student safety and wellbeing concerns.
    • Perform behavioral assessments for Office of Student Responsibility and Community Standards.
    • Conduct Stuctured Interview for Violence Risk Assessment (SIVRA-35) to assess the risk/protective factors related to an individual's willingness to engage in violence.
    • Track Critical Incidents.
    • Liaise with Health Communication Specialist in regards to website, social media, graphic design and other marketing efforts and development.
    • Coordination of crisis services in times of increased need (midterms, finals, etc.).
    • Using nationally and internationally recognized diagnostic systems, diagnose student and develop and implement treatment plans consistent with clinical diagnosis.
    • Maintain compliance with mandatory local, state and federal reporting laws and professional and ethical standards and guidelines.
    • Refer students to off-campus clinical services for specialized treatment and/or long-term therapy as appropriate.
    • Provides outreach and education about Counseling Center service offerings to staff, faculty and student organizations.
    • Maintain a knowledge of federal, state, and local mental health system and well-being resources.
    • Keep timely, accurate, and ethical records consistent with Counseling Center policy.
    • Participate in student well-being committees and Counseling Center initiatives.
    • Attend weekly Counseling Center meetings.

    • Ability to work with diverse student population, including knowledge of related cultural influences that may affect health.
    • Interpersonal human relations skills including ability to maintain and convey a positive attitude.
    • Training in trauma-informed care and psychotherapy approaches to trauma.
    • Experience with, and sensitivity to, diverse populations and the ability to build inclusive and equitable communities where differences are appreciated and engaged.
    • Openness to feedback and a commitment to personal and professional growth.
    • Effective conflict management skills.
    • Understanding of academic cultures, rules, and regulations.
    Required Experience
    • Master's Degree in Licensed Clinical Social Work (LCSW), Licensed Professional Counseling (LPC) Clinical Psychologist (PhD or PsyD) or Licensed Marital and Family Therapist (LMFT) with training and experience in crisis intervention and case management; supplemented with three (3) years of related experience
    • Certification/Licensure- State of Missouri or eligibility for MO licensure, as documented by out-of-state licensure
    Work Hours: 12-month position salaried

    M - F, 8 a m -5 pm - occasional evenings (for emergencies)

    Two remote days monthly (coverage permitting)
