THE OPPORTUNITY
Performs the most difficult legal assignments in providing advice to and representing the Board of Supervisors and the County and its departments/agencies in litigation and may supervise subordinate attorneys.
CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS
These positions are allocated only to the Office of the County Counsel and typically receive general direction, from an Assistant County Counsel, primarily pertaining to policy.
Senior Deputy County Counsel positions are responsible for assignments involving the most difficult and complex legal matters which requires a high degree of initiative, skill and specialized legal knowledge or acting as principal legal advisor to a large County department or special district.
This class is the first level at which supervisory duties may be assigned and requires that incumbents be able to exercise knowledge of the principles of supervision and have a thorough knowledge of legal principles and their application.
In addition, applicants must possess the ability to appear in federal and state court, and administrative hearings.Essential Job Functions
WHAT WILL I DO AS A SENIOR DEPUTY COUNTY COUNSEL?
Represents the County and County-related agencies in State and federal court litigation, and administrative proceedings, relating to code enforcement, consumer protection, environmental justice and public health, and/or affirmative litigation where the County is the plaintiff.
Provides legal advice and representation to the Board of Supervisors, County departments, and County-related agencies concerning code enforcement, consumer protection, environmental and public health issues, and affirmative litigation when the County is the plaintiff.
Works closely with other lawyers, County departments, and the Board of Supervisors on code enforcement team to enforce violations of County Code and protect consumers.
Coordinates with County officials, other jurisdictions, and State, regional and local agencies on litigation involving consumer protection, code enforcement, affirmative litigation, and/or environmental justice and public health issues.
RequirementsWE ARE LOOKING FOR INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE:
Specialty Requirements
Seven (7) years' experience in civil litigation; five (5) years of which must include experience in the areas of complex litigation*, code enforcement, consumer protection, civil rights, or environmental justice/public health matters.
Complex litigation is defined as legal cases involving multiple parties, difficult legal issues, extensive motion practice, and/or large number of witnesses.
Admission to practice law in all courts of California**.
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
Physical Class II - Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting.
Desirable Qualifications
Experience beyond the requirements in the areas of complex litigation, particularly representing plaintiffs, including litigation of consumer protection, code enforcement, civil rights, environmental justice, or public health matters.
Experience as a city, county or federal prosecutor.

OUR ASSESSMENT PROCESS
This assessment type will evaluation the training, experience, and desirable qualifications you list on a questionnaire and assign a score based on a standardized scoring system.
Professional/Technical Knowledge in the experience requested.
Applicants must meet the selection requirements and must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the assessment in order to be placed on the Eligible Register.
ELIGIBLE INFORMATION
Candidates who passed the assessment(s) are placed on a list in the order of their score group for a period of six (6) months.
Applicants will be processed on an as-received basis, and promulgated to the Eligible Register accordingly.
RETAKE:
NO PERSON MAY COMPETE FOR THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY SIX (6) MONTHS.
NO WITHHOLDS OR OUT-OF-CLASS EXPERIENCE WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR THIS EXAMINATION.
VETERAN'S CREDIT
If you are a veteran, you may be eligible for veteran's credit, which is an additional 10% of the total points added to a passing score.
We will need a copy of your form DD214 to review, so please include that with your application or email it to by the end of filing period.
VACANCY INFORMATION
The resulting Eligible Register for this examination will be used to fill vacancies throughout the Office of the County Counsel.
