    Job summary

    The Radiotherapy Engineering Group (REG) at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care (NCCC) is looking for a motivated radiotherapy engineer to join our team. Radiotherapy engineers are part of a team responsible for the electromechanical maintenance of equipment used in the delivery of radiotherapy treatment.

    NCCC is based at both the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle and Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle and provides a highly specialised clinical service for the treatment of cancer patients. The successful candidate will be based primarily at the Freeman Hospital but will be required to work on both sites as the work demands.

    The department is equipped with Varian & Tomotherapy Linear Accelerators and specific training for this equipment will be given if required.

  • Main duties of the job

    Radiotherapy Engineers specialise in the provision of Radiotherapy Service. The main duties for a Radiotherapy Engineer are:

  • Maintenance of Radiotherapy and ancillary equipment Carry out planned preventative maintenance on treatment machineAccurate fault diagnosis and effective repairsMonitor trends for equipment reliability
  • Quality Control of Radiotherapy Systems Work within a Quality Management SystemUndertake quality control for equipmentSupport Provision of Radiotherapy Engineering Service
  • Applications are invited from experienced candidates with a master's level qualification or who have equivalent experience in an appropriate discipline, and have demonstrable relevant experience, having completed a recognised engineering or technical apprenticeship or training course
  • Radiotherapy Engineers work independently or as part of multidisciplinary teams, providing specialist engineering services and technical knowledge enabling patient care.

    Job responsibilities

  • Assist in the delivery of the technological aspects of radiotherapy service
  • Assists in providing professional technological leadership in an area of expertise locally.
  • Assists in maintaining and developing high standards of service provision throughout their area of responsibility
  • Assists in developing, implementing and monitoring clinical and organisational strategies within areas of expertise
  • Contributes to service and staff development
  • Responsibilities in specialist project areas
  • Participates in roster covering 7-day working week.
  • The responsibilities of REG Engineers include ensuring treatment machines function correctly and therefore enable patient treatment, applying fault diagnosis skills, engineering knowledge and IT knowledge to minimise clinical downtime, carrying out planned preventative and unplanned corrective maintenance, and providing the technical, engineering-related input to multidisciplinary radiotherapy service team. REG also works closely with the clinical and scientific Radiotherapy teams to balance the needs of the service.

    Please note it is a requirement of The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that all successful candidates who require a DBS for the post they have been offered pay for their DBS method of payment is a salary deduction from your first months pay.

    Person Specification

    Qualifications and Education

    Essential

  • Recognised Degree in relevant subject or equivalent experience
  • Appropriate post-graduate degree at master's level, or equivalent level of specialist knowledge
  • On the RCT or AHCS PTP register
  • Desirable

  • Management training, , ILM Level 3
  • Recent Radiation Protection Supervisor certificate
  • Knowledge & Experience

    Essential

  • Specialist training and practical experience on Linear accelerators, CT scanners and other radiotherapy equipment
  • Extensive practical experience in radiation equipment servicing, workshop practices and techniques, covering preventative maintenance, servicing, calibration and quality control, inspection, repair and safety
  • Specialist knowledge of electrical and electronic engineering, electro-mechanical and computer systems
  • Good knowledge of IT software packages (, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Excel) and experience of applying them
  • Working knowledge of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines, local rules and safety practices, , ISO 9001, BSI standards, COSHH
  • Broad knowledge of Radiotherapy field
  • Awareness of Radiation protection considerations of sealed, unsealed and x-ray generator sources
  • Desirable

  • Completion of relevant manufacturers certified training
  • Skills and Abilities

    Essential

  • Literacy, numeracy and accuracy of a high order
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines and maintain technical services
  • Able to communicate complex information to other professional groups (including manufacturers)
  • Ability to service, repair and calibrate complex medical and scientific equipment using appropriate test instrumentation
  • Use precision test and measurement equipment safely and effectively
