    Qualifications:

    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Completion of approved training course for the ESE school bus driver
    • CPR and First Aid approved training courses for school-based personnel
    • Successful completion of a physical exam by a school board approved physician
    • Experience as a Charlotte County school bus driver for three (3) years
    • Effective oral and written communication skills
    • Valid Florida commercial driver's license and all other required endorsements to drive a school bus
    • Certification to operate each type of school bus within the district fleet or willingness to become certified within three (3) months of employment
    • Certification (or ability to become certified) as an ESE bus operator within six (6) months ofemployment
    *Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate.

    Performance Responsibilities:
    1. Drives any route necessary in the absence of a permanent driver. Has working knowledge of the routes of the drivers assigned to the supervising dispatcher.
    2. Assists the routing and scheduling manager in the development of routes and trips, ensuring the safe placement of stops, proper stop sequencing, and map information.
    3. Assists the safety and training manager in reviewing reports of unsafe stops, unsafe walking conditions, and in making recommendations based on the review; assists drivers in bi-annual, state-mandated bus evacuation drills.
    4. Assists in the monitoring of bus cleaning, and, as needed, Child Safety Restraint System placement.
    5. Assists in the preparation of training, safety meetings, and related operational instruction to enhance the professional development of assigned drivers and attendants.
    6. Assists the service manager in transferring buses as required.
    7. Obeys all traffic laws.
    8. Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses.
    9. Maintains student discipline and reports undisciplined students to principal of school or to supervisor.
    10. Keeps to assigned schedule when traffic conditions permit.
    11. Follows the printed route for bus unless permission to follow an alternate route is given by the transportation office.
    12. Performs pre-trip inspection of bus for mechanical defects including fire blankets and wheelchair restraining devices.
    13. Notifies proper authorities of mechanical failure through submission of appropriate form.
    14. Discharges students only at authorized stops.
    15. Transports only authorized persons as identified by the administration.
    16. Reports all accidents, vehicle or student, immediately to the transportation office and completes all required forms.
    17. Enforces all regulations against eating, drinking, smoking, dipping, chewing or any use of tobacco, drugs or related products on the bus.
    18. Attends all required safety and training sessions.
    19. Complies with all written official policies and regulations of the transportation department, of the school board and of the State of Florida.
    20. Maintains effective working relationship with other employees, parents, and the public.
    21. Wears the prescribed uniform.
    22. Assists regular drivers in student management skills, on and off the bus, as needed.
    23. Performs other duties consistent with the goals and objectives of the position.
    24. Assists in the preparation and review of documents related to bus operation; assists in routine office functions, such as phone answering, seat charts/left-right sheet preparation.
