    POSITION PURPOSE:
    The Forensic Services Nurse will ensure the provision of high quality, safe, effective and efficient nursing services to patients/victims of violence. The Forensic Nurse is responsible for responding to abuse and/or assault victims or suspects by providing quality patient care and forensic evidence collection. The Forensic Nurse integrates services with all hospital departments, law enforcement, child protective services, adult protective services, victim advocacy, district attorney, community health providers, and the public.

    NATURE AND SCOPE:
    The Forensic Nurse reports to the Forensic Services Supervisor. Forensic Nurse provides nursing care for patients across the lifespan, including neonates, children, adolescents, adults and the elderly. Forensic Nurse coordinates care among community response teams. The Forensic Nurse understands the scope of forensic nursing practice. The Forensic Nurse understands that care of the forensic patient may involve interaction with civil and criminal legal systems and law enforcement.

    KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Education and/or Experience: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
    • Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Alaska
    • BLS certification
    • Minimum of three years recent acute care hospital experience
    • At least one year of recent emergency department experience or a minimum of one year experience in caring for victims of assault/abuse preferred
    • Successful completion of a sexual assault nurse examiner adult certification course
    • Successful completion of an approved sexual assault nurse examiner pediatric certification course
    • Successful completion of adult and pediatric forensic nurse preceptorship requirements
    • Have knowledge of the principles and theory underlying nursing procedures and interventions performed; possess advanced physical assessment skills
    • Familiarity with legal, ethical, and medical issues related to assault and/or abuse of children and adults

    To perform this job successfully, the employee must perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The Forensic Nurse will complete forensic nurse preceptorship requirements within two months of hire and will successfully complete the Forensic Nurse skills assessment annually or more frequently as required by the Forensic Services Supervisor.     ENVIRONMENT:
    The Emergency Department (ED) consists of a nine-bed unit with a joined two-room trauma suite, and a central station. The position requires walking, standing for extended periods, and the ability to lift 35 pounds. Persons in this position are exposed to infectious diseases, including all types of blood-borne pathogens, muscle strains, and falls. A mechanical lift/hover mat is available for lifting-transferring patients when needed. Generally, physical demands are moderate and most work is performed inside. Work hours fluctuate based on patient acuity and required meetings. Forensic Nurses must maintain competency by working with patients.
