    Job Description:


    The Certified Physicist is responsible for the design optimization, technical evaluation, and precise and accurate delivery of radiation treatment plans under the guidance of the Administrative Director/Manager.

    The Certified Physicist collaborates with the Radiation Oncology Director and the Radiation Safety Officer to assure the maintenance of a quality management program and safety for all radiation oncology activities.

    The Department of Radiation Oncology at Intermountain Health has an opening for a full-time board-eligible or board-certified Medical Physicist.

    You will be joining a group of 4 other certified medical physicists providing clinical services to 6 clinics (2 of these are LDR alone) located in the Salt Lake Valley in partnership with 6 Radiation Oncologists, 6 Dosimetrists and dedicated IT support.


    • Our clinical program is equipped with the latest radiotherapy technology utilizing a Varian/Aria/Eclipse (v.16.1 with GPU FAS servers) environment and includes 5 TrueBeam linear accelerators (one with SRS HyperArc capability), IDENTIFY SGRT, a Leksell Elekta Gamma Knife Icon (to be upgraded to Esprit this year), 2 GE Discovery RT CTs with Varian RGSC & smart deviceless 4D, a Varian GammaMedPlus HDR afterloader (to be replaced in 2025), and a full suite of Radformation products (ClearCheck, ClearCalc, RadMonteCarlo, AutoContour, EZFluence and RadMachine). You will contribute to active programs in conformal radiotherapy, IMRT, VMAT, IGRT, TBI, and SRS/SFRT/SBRT/IORT/4D/Gated/DIBH . Both HDR (gyn, prostate, skin, breast,...) and LDR (eye plaques, PSI, IVB, Y90 microspheres, bile duct...) brachytherapy are a critical component in caring for our patients. We also have a MOSFET invivo program and an inhouse printer for 3D bolus.

    Physics equipment & software include:

    DQA3, an IBA Water Tank, SNC 1D water tank, SRS MapCheck, SNC IC Profiler/Profiler 2, Portal Dosimetry, SNC Edge detector, a range of Ionization Chambers, survey meters, electrometers, phantoms and a broad variety of other physics instrumentation.

    We are scheduled to upgrade to Aria v.18 later this year. As an ASTRO-APEX accredited radiation oncology program, we are committed to continued improvement in the services we provide.

    Job Essentials:


    Oversees the development and implementation of the procedure for calibration of radiation therapy equipment in accordance with the current standards of the American Association of Physicist in Medicine (AAPM) and state and federally governed agencies and formulates and oversees all aspects of brachytherapy within the department and those procedures performed in other departments in collaboration with the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) to maintain safety standards.

    Assumes responsibility for providing yearly full calibration measurements on all therapeutic radiation machines as required by the Utah Division of Radiation Control and commissions new or upgraded equipment to achieve compatibility with existing machines.

    Oversees and coordinates with the Chief Therapist the technical functions in the department in order to ensure that physician's instructions for simulation and treatment of patients are carried out as prescribed and intended, and directs, coordinates and performs all aspects of treatment planning, preparation of beam shaping devices, etc.

    Actively works as a Medical physicist and provides routine clinical radiation therapy physicist services, consults with oncologists on the physical aspects of patient's treatment, and assists in the development of radiation treatment plans.

    Coordinates the radioactive Materials Licenses issued by the NRC and state agencies pertaining to brachytherapy sources with the RSO, reports all variances to administrative staff and the Radiation Safety Officer, researches new equipment developments and techniques, assess the impact on and reviews existing local standards, advises on procurement of new equipment and compiles reports to initiate changes.

    Supervises and evaluates physicists and dosimetrists performance and attendance, schedules rotations as appropriate between facilities, acts as an advocate for new and advanced technology, participates in the development and implementation of department Quality Improvement Plan and ensures the delivery of high quality health care.

    Ensures documentation, orientation, and training of newly hired dosimetrists and trainees.


    Minimum Qualifications:
    Master's degree in Health or Medical Physics from an accredited institution (degree will be verified).

    Certification by one of the following: American Board of Radiology or American Board of Medical Physics in Radiation Oncology Physics or Canadian College of Medical Physics.


    Preferred Qualifications:
    Knowledge of operating systems, software installation, file management and computer hardware
    Administration and clinical development of Oncology Information Systems (Varian Aria)
    Conversant in network topology, server infrastructure, backup system design
    General programming experience (SQL, Python, scripting, C/C++/C#)
    Troubleshooting linac network communication with R&V system
    CT Sim operation including laser control and 4DCT reconstruction and image processing
    Knowledge of DICOM CT, MR, & PET image handling and DICOM RT data transfer
