Permaculture Assistant

The Adrian Dominican Sisters are seeking a Full Time Permaculture Assistant to join our Permaculture Department at our Motherhouse campus in Adrian, MI.

In this role you will: Work to promote our campus sustainability and permaculture goals by assisting the Permaculture Specialist doing hands-on planting, harvesting, and maintenance of the permaculture site. During the winter months, you will assist the Facilities and Grounds crew with snow removal and general facilities labor. You will perform tasks with physical labor, powered equipment, and hand tools on our permaculture site and campus grounds. You will be part of a team that works to create biodiversity, maximize land resiliency, promote sustainability and live right relationships with the Earth community.

Pay and Hours: /hr. based on experience. Monday - Friday 7:30am - 4pm, (summer months may flex to 6am - 2:30pm) Occasional weekends and holidays as needed for snow removal. This is a full time, year-round position.

Responsibilities:

• Plants, maintains and harvests vegetables and fruits.
• Installs and maintains native plant landscapes throughout campus.
• Cares for vermiculture bins.
• Collects material for composting.
• Weeds, plants, waters, landscapes, mulches, prunes.
• Assists with site improvement projects.
• Assists with snow removal, shoveling, and deicing, to keep walkways and entrances accessible.
• Assists with general indoor maintenance tasks such as moving furniture or site improvement projects.
• Assists the maintenance specialists and skilled maintenance co-workers.
• Responds appropriately to safety hazards and/or emergencies following written campus procedures.
• Complies with all safety policies and procedures by practicing good safety and health habits.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High School graduate or equivalent preferred

Experience: Experience with organic vegetable gardening, fruit growing and/or native plants is desirable. Experience with machine operation such as ATV's, tractors, and snow plow is desirable. Knowledge of permaculture ethics and principles is desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Understand and carry out oral and/or written instructions.
• Must hold a valid Michigan motor vehicle operator's license and be able to safely and effectively operate all heavy equipment for mowing and snow removal.
• Must be able to safely and effectively operate power equipment and hand tools.
• Ability to work with others and/or independently.
• Must demonstrate ability to make proper use of personal protective equipment appropriate for certain duties.
• Good attitude and work ethic and willingness to perform a variety of tasks.

Physical: Must be able to frequently stoop, bend, reach, and lift/carry at least 50 pounds. Must be able to sit, stand, and walk up to 8-hours per day. Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions. Must be sighted and capable of hearing. Annual influenza vaccination is required for this position.
