    This position is located in San Xavier, AZ.

    Position Summary:


    Under close supervision, assists in the preservation and maintenance of the O'odham language in the presentation of Hewel Ni'ok Network's general programming.

    Responsible for communicating in the O'odham language through translation of public service announcements and community events for local public notice.

    The work is normally reviewed while in progress and upon completion of each assignment to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and conformance to established standards; most aspects of the work tasks are covered by detailed instructions or procedures.


    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
    Provides accurate translation of information on a variety of topics.

    Assists staff and volunteers in the daily use of conversational O'odham language during broadcast programming on the Hewel Ni'ok Network.

    Assists in the recording of and archiving oral histories, songs and other oratory presentations.
    Ensures compliance with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations and the standards set by management.

    Introduces or back announces music aired through the use of the O'odham language during Hewel Ni'ok Network's general programming as assigned.

    Through the use of the O'odham language, reads news copy, community events and underwriter's sponsorship during assigned immersive O'odham language programming.

    Coordinates listeners' dedications and requests during assigned immersive O'odham language programming.
    Assists in the editing of O'odham language recorded material for broadcast.
    Assists the General Manager and assigned staff in promotional events and activities.

    Audits songs recorded in the O'odham language recommended for air play to assure that material accepted for rotation is free of offensive or prohibited language.

    Provides O'odham language voice-overs for promotional program liners and public service announcements.
    Assists programmers and producers during live broadcasts and remotes with on-site equipment.
    Represents Hewel Ni'ok Network in a positive and professional manner.
    Establishes posts and keeps reasonable office hours.
    Reports directly to the General Manager or designee.
    Performs other job related duties as assigned and contributes to a team effort.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
    Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
    Knowledge of dissemination techniques and methods.
    Skill in speaking, talking to others to convey information, effectively.
    Skill in reading comprehension, understanding written work related documents.

    Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

    Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
    Ability to speak without a script and communicate information and ideas so others will understand.
    Ability to get information from all relevant sources.
    Ability to speak clearly, intelligently or amusingly about popular culture in general.
    Ability to maintain privileged confidential information.
    Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
    Ability to exercise independent judgment.
    Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
    Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
    Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    High School Diploma or General Education Diploma preferred.
    Demonstrate novice-high level competency in speaking and understanding the O'odham language.

    Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:
    O'odham language proficiency test preferred.
    Must have a pleasant and well-controlled voice and excellent pronunciation.
    Upon recommendation for hire a criminal background and fingerprint check is required to determine suitability for hire.

    Based on the department's needs, incumbents are required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham Language and English as a condition of employment.
