    Description

    Summary:Supervise and coordinates activities of a specific nursing unit. Plan and evaluate care in accordance with the policies and objectives of the Nursing Department. Provides direct and indirect patient care in the medical surgical setting. Communicates with physicians/Nurse Manager/co-workers, as appropriate about changes in patient's clinical condition including results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Is able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Additionally, is able to perform general nursing duties in all departments with adequate supervision.


    Job Responsibilities:

    Performs all aspects of job in an environment that optimizes patient/staff safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Interacts professionally with patient/family/staff and involves patient/family/staff. Treats patients, families, staff, and visitors with respects and dignity. Functions as liaison between administration, patients, peers, and other healthcare providers.2)
    Participates actively in problem solving within the department and between departments. Communicates with supervisor and peers. Establishes and maintains effective communication and good working relationship with other departments. Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and functions under stressful situations. Performs other related duties as assigned or required.3)
    Utilizes initiative; strives to maintain steady level of productivity; self-motivation; manages activity and time; does not waste time. Fosters a positive customer service culture. Supports the philosophies and objectives of the Nursing Department. Serves as a resource person/model in order to facilitate quality patient care.4)
    Utilizes independent judgment in problem solving of unit activities. Assess the education needs of staff. Assists in goal setting and implementation. Assists with the evaluation process of personnel. Evaluates the delivery of nursing care through daily patient rounds and frequent chart review.5)
    Assists in Performance Improvement studies and the education of staff to improve compliance with Performance Improvement issues and Standards of Care. Investigates and follows up with case situations and reports to the Director of Patient Care Services.6)
    Functions as a patient advocate and promotes awareness of patient's rights. Handles emergencies in accordance with hospital protocol. Provides for appropriate orientation of new employees.7)
    Maintains good employee, interdepartmental and public relations. Assumes responsibility for professional development and continuing education. Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition.8)
    Follows the five medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors. Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient's age. Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy.


    This includes:
    pediatric, geriatric and the general patient population.

    Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management. Ability to revise plan of care as indicated by the patient's response to treatment and evaluate overall plan daily for effectiveness.10)
    Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning, family is included in teaching as appropriate. Demonstrates ability to perform treatments and provide services to level licensure.11)
    Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient's needs.

    Provides care appropriate to condition and age of patient, including:
    pediatric, geriatric and general population.

    Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians with procedures and performs services requiring technical and manual skills. Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.13)
    Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psycho social, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families. Functions as liaison between administration, patients, physicians and other healthcare providers.14)
    Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patient population served.

    Able to interpret data about the patient's status in order to identify each patient's age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group.

    Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care. Documentation meets current standards and policies.

    Identifies and addresses psycho social needs of patients and family; communicates with social service/discharge planner regarding both in hospital and post discharge needs. Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.16)
    Works at maintaining good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with peers. Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean. Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time. Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized punch time system correctly.17)
    Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner. Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices. Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility, as well as the mission statement of the department and hospital.18)
    Works at maintaining good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with peers. Maintains regulatory requirements. Attends annual review and department in-services/educational requirements, as scheduled.19)
    Attends staff meetings and submits meeting minutes. Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (COl) activities.

    Required Work Experience
    :

    1
    ) 2 years in recent, active nursing practice.2)
    Experience in role with demonstrated leadership responsibilities.
