The UVA Department of Student Health and Wellness, Well-Being Services is seeking a Graphic Design Intern to design the Stall Seat Journals. The Intern will work directly with the Peer Health Education Specialist and the Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications to creatively design nine issues of the Stall Seat Journal on topics such as substance safety, body image, alcohol, sleep, and more. This position is ideal for a student who wants to gain hands-on experience in health communication by using and building upon their graphic design skills. This Intern will build a strong portfolio through the creation of print materials informed by data and behavioral theory, collaborate closely with professional staff, and learn how design can be used as a tool to promote well-being and positive behavior change at a large public university.

The Stall Seat Journal (SSJ), located in bathroom stalls in first-year housing and around Grounds, is a social norms campaign correcting misperceptions about healthy behaviors. At UVA, most students are making healthy choices most of the time, but sometimes people underestimate healthy behaviors among their peers. The SSJ corrects misperceptions by providing accurate data highlighting healthy behaviors. Showcasing healthy choices frees students to make decisions that align with their values. This is based on social norms theory, which is the foundation for several programs at UVA, including the Stall Seat Journal.

The position is roughly 5-10 hours weekly May-September and 1-3 hours monthly October-April. Remote work is available.

Responsibilities:

• Utilizing provided Stall Seat Journal content, the Intern will create an engaging poster for each of the Stall Seat Journals using Adobe InDesign.

Required Qualifications:

• Effectively use Adobe Creative Cloud programs (InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop).
• Software can be provided if working in Well-Being Services office suite.
• The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and attributes:
• Be a currently enrolled UVA student in good standing at the University
• Be available to meet in-person or virtually 1-2 times a week with the Peer Health Education Specialist and Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications
• Have excellent time management skills to meet production schedule deadlines
• Be able to effectively communicate verbally/in writing and follow written instructions

Position Compensation: $13.00/hr

Interviews will take place in mid-April with an expected start in late May. Preference will be given to candidates who apply before April 10th.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
