    About the Role:

    We are seeking a Tax Research Analyst to contribute to Gusto's tax research team at our Scottsdale office in Arizona. This role reports to the Manager of Tax Research.

    • You will be responsible for finding, monitoring, and communicating tax changes and compliance updates to cross-functional teams for all of Gusto's products, including US and Canada.
    • Leverage your prior payroll, tax, or accounting experience to empower new products and functionality in the payroll and HR tech space.

    Key Responsibilities:

    1. Manage a set of US and Canada jurisdictions, keeping them updated by analyzing, interpreting, and communicating federal, state, and local payroll tax compliance changes.
    2. Gather and present research on new taxes, working with tax agencies and partners to deep-dive on withholding attributes.
    3. Research and answer client questions facilitated by our Support team, investigating behavior in our products to ensure compliance with recent regulations.
    4. Willingness to take on Canadian compliance responsibilities and handle complex questions.
    5. Participate in process improvement, testing of new processes, and providing feedback.
    6. Adopt and test new technologies like compliance tracking software and AI tools.
    7. Involvement in local and national payroll industry groups.
    8. Identify and stay on top of compliance trends, tracking legislation from inception to completion for your jurisdictions.
    9. Collaborate with Marketing to provide content for different platforms, fact-checking their content.
    10. Take on special projects outside of year-end timeframes.
    11. Audit large groups of local taxes.

    Requirements:

    • Bachelor's Degree in a STEM-related field, Tax, Accounting, Finance, or Social Sciences.
    • 5-7 years of experience in payroll tax, compliance, accounting, or related fields.
    • Ability to work in the Scottsdale office on a hybrid schedule.
    • Travel up to once per quarter.

    Preferred Certifications and Experience:

    • PayrollOrg CPP or FPC Certification, National Payroll Institute in Canada PCP certification.
    • CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or similar certification.
    • Canada, US Multistate, or local tax experience in KY, OH, or PA.
    • Prior experience with tax laws, regulations, and third-party research databases.
    • Payroll service provider, agency, or tax filing and reporting experience.
    • Prior technical experience developing compliance requirements for software developers.

    Our cash compensation for this role targets $85,000 - $107,000 per year in Scottsdale. Final offer amounts consider candidate experience and expertise.
