    Director - Sullivan Museum and History Center

    Job Description:
    Fulfills the mission of Norwich University by providing leadership, coordination, oversight, and vision for the operations of the Sullivan Museum and History Center, fostering a positive, high service, and innovative culture now and in future university initiatives.

    Essential Functions

    Directs museum operations, including development, education, programming, finance, internal and external communications, strategic planning, and staffing.
    Leads the development of the collection scope.
    Implements a collections management policy, including acquisitions, deaccessioning, conservation and contingency planning for the maintenance and preservation of the museum's holdings.
    Plans and maintains best practices for the museum leading to efforts to obtain national recognition for excellence.
    Cultivates collaborative relationships with museum donors, alumni, faculty, staff, students, and volunteers.
    Provides direction for fundraising and developmental activities with foundations, corporations, and individual donors, and pursues opportunities with local and regional culture institutions in partnership with Development and Alumni Relations.
    Directs public relations and marketing initiatives including effective communications plans.
    Coordinates with the Museum Associates Executive Committee.
    Plans and executes a long-term comprehensive interpretive program that promulgates the history of Norwich University through exhibitions, publications, research, and the museum's website.
    Establishes and conducts a vibrant calendar of activities and events programming for the University and the community at large.
    Serves on the Friends of Morrill Homestead's Board of Director as the Norwich University representative.
    Oversees the museum budgets and grant disbursements.
    Manages, secures, and maintains the property and facilities of the museum.
    Oversees museum staff, volunteers, and consultants.
    Other Functions

    Assesses the performance of direct reports and provides frequent feedback to optimize their performance.
    Maintains confidentiality of sensitive or private information.
    Communicates with employees, students, and others in a respectful and clear manner.
    Serves on university committees, councils, workgroups, or other designated bodies as assigned.
    Achieves, maintains proficiency in, and utilizes computers, telephones, and other job-related equipment, including related systems and software.
    Speaks, reads, and writes in English.
    Communicates by telephone, email, letter, in person, or other means or device.
    Performs other tasks as assigned by supervisor.

    Requirements:
    Master's degree in museum studies, history, or related field.
    Seven or more years of museum experience, preferably in an academic setting.
    Must have a thorough knowledge of professional museum principles and practices.
    Knowledge of and interest in American history, including military history.
    Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
    Experience in exhibition development, instructional initiatives, and program planning.
    Understanding of museum facilities operations.
    Staff and volunteer management skills.
    Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams, and Outlook). Experience with content management systems required; experience with Proficio collections management database preferred.
    Able to sit, squat, reach, push, pull, and manipulate related equipment; lift 40 pounds; travel outdoors to various parts of the campus.
    Work some evening or weekend hours.
    Travel as needed (public or private transportation)
    Environmental Conditions

    Indoors in climate control museum environment with frequent use of a computer and telephone at a workstation.
    Medium level of exposure to noise, dust, fumes, and vibrations related to museum collections, acquisitions, exhibition, and preservation work.
