    This is technical work involving installation and supportof the municipal computer internetwork.
    Nature Of Work


    Employees in this class are responsible for installationand management and troubleshooting on the city's inter-networks, including thelocal area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs).

    Work is of more thanaverage difficulty and requires considerable interaction with users, networkteam members, other departmental technical support staff, and vendors.

    Undergeneral supervision, employees exercise considerable initiative and independentjudgment while installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and performing problemanalysis on the city inter-networks.

    Employees are subject to on-call status ona rotating schedule to provide 7day/24 hour per day service and, at times, arerequired to work unusual hours to accommodate installation, maintenance and/orupgrading of city networks.

    Work is reviewed through conferences and resultsachieved.
    Examples of Duties

    Moves, Adds and Changes(MACS):


    coordinates and schedules theinstallation and maintenance of both general use and application specificsoftware with vendors and users; coordinates network installation and upgrades,facilitates departmental relocations by moving LAN and WAN equipment andservices; performs cabling audits and certification.


    Problem Analysis & Remediation:


    provides first levelsupport via the Technology andInnovation (T&I) Help Desk for PC's, printers, file andprint servers, and network equipment in both standalone and networkenvironments; determines probable cause for reported network problems andimplements or recommends solutions; coordinates problem resolution with users,other technical support staff, and/or external network support providers; makesrepairs as appropriate.


    Server Installations, Maintenance and Upgrades:


    installs, monitors and maintains network services, includingbut not limited to print, file, security, backup, Email, network addresstranslation services (such as DHCP and DNS), gateways for terminal emulation,and other application services for a variety of platforms, including NovellNetWare and Microsoft NT; provides server support including installation of newservers, upgrading existing servers, hardware upgrades for servers, hubs,switches, and other network equipment, operating system upgrades for LAN-basedservers (primarily Novell and NT), and system upgrades for mobile computing.


    Desktop Support:

    installs, maintains and provides first level support for PC-based software fora variety of desktop platforms, including Win9.x and NT; installs and supportstypical client based software such as NOS client software, database software, MS-Office,Geographic Information Systems, and other specialized software; installs anumber of network protocols including SNA, TCP/IP, Netbios and NW Link;supports a variety of transport topologies including frame relay, FDDI, ATM,etc.

    in both Token Ring and Ethernet topologies.


    Server Backup:
    managesthe back-up and data restoration for LAN-based servers on the city'sWAN.


    Research and Design:


    may evaluate new software and services forcitywide deployment; may involve network documentation, developing projectplans, problem reporting and management, updating of network databases andservices or preparing reports.


    Leadership and Training:


    serves as lead worker over lower leveltechnical support staff when installing new network-related software or applyingnetwork software patches; trains computer operations staff on the networkenvironment; assists users in utilizing new desktop software, hardware orperipherals.

    Performs related work as required.
    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities


    Workingknowledge of:


    Hardware and softwareutilized in the city's PC LAN network which may include Win 9.x, NT, NovellNetWare and the associated Intel-based hardware platforms.

    dDatacommunication and teleprocessing techniques; typical data processing proceduresand terminology; network protocols, including SNA, TCP/IP, Netbios and NW Link;transport topologies including frame relay, FDDI, ATM, etc.

    in both Token Ringand Ethernet topologies.

    Computer hardware andperipherals/servers, Completion of Dell TechDirect Certification, WindowsOperating Systems, Office 365 and Cloud Portal Administration, Mobile DeviceManagement; problem management processes; networking hardware devices,CheckPoints and network IP address standards; antivirus knowledge; cloudcomputing; designing, configuring, and troubleshooting mobile devices;extensive knowledge of collaboration tools; hard drive sanitation, disposal andrecycling.

    Video conferencing; Androidand IOS operating systems, Apple hardware and macOS, phones, tablets devices. Xerox copiers troubleshooting withPrinterLogic administration. ConferenceRoom A/V knowledge troubleshooting; may require after hours onsite meetingsupport. White Glove "VIP" support andwork with Vendors Support.

    Ability to:

    physically lift and move personal computers and other related equipment asnecessary; diagnose problems work under pressure withchanging priorities in a complexnetwork environment and correct them; analyze network equipment and/or softwareand implement appropriate solutions; train users in operations of the networkenvironment; establish and maintain effective working relationships with users,data processing personnel, and others.

    Acquiredknowledge of new technologies; work underpressure with changing priorities in a complex environment; workingboth independently and in a team-oriented,

    collaborativeenvironment is essential; express oneself clearly and concisely, both orallyand in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships withothers. Ability to lift 40+ pounds, pushing, carrying, kneeling, etc. Ability to take calls from clients andmonitor ACD lines, generates tickets based on call and TRIAGE the call forescalation.
    Providesupport after hours when necessary based on our after hour support on-callschedule.
    Followup with customers as necessary.
    Minimum Qualifications


    Graduation from an accredited college or university with abachelor's degree with appropriate computer related coursework and one (1) yearof experience in troubleshooting and repairing computer network hardware andsoftware.


    An equivalent combination of education (not less than possession of a high school diploma/GED), training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job related competencies noted above.

    Licenses or Certifications

    Possession of a valid Florida driver's license required.
    Certification in one of the following

    specialties


    preferred :
    Certification as a Novell Certified Network Engineer (CNE)
    Comments

    Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.

    During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
