    JOB SUMMARY:


    In accordance with the philosophy and goals of OSS Orthopaedic Hospital and within the scope of the Pennsylvania Nurse Practice Act, the Registered Nurse (RN) will provide care in an atmosphere sensitive to each person's physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs.

    The RN is accountable for the delivery of patient care utilizing the Nursing Process within the standards, policies, procedures and guidelines of the organization.


    QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION:

    • Graduate of School of Nursing or Associate Degree in Nursing required. Bachelor's degree in Nursing or health related field preferred.
    • License and current registration as a professional nurse in the State of Pennsylvania required.
    Must have one year of experience as an RN in inpatient care and/or related Peri-Operative experience. Orthopaedic or telemetry experience preferred.


    • CPR certification required. Must possess ACLS certification or have the ability to achieve within one year.
    • Must demonstrate appropriate knowledge in the principles of growth and development over the life span of the patient.
    • Must be able to effectively and efficiently make use of time and resources.
    • Must have strong computer skills.
    • Must have professional and effective communication skills and be able to promote effective communication at all levels.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates patient care for an assigned group of patients.
    • Verifies and implements physician/other licensed independent practitioners' orders.
    • Administers medications according to OSS standards, policies, procedures and/or guidelines.
    • Initiates appropriate emergency procedures and administers life-support drugs/treatment under the direction of the physician.
    • Assumes responsibility and accountability for care provided and documented by other licensed and unlicensed caregivers as appropriate.
    • Manages patient assignments effectively.
    • Coordinates/facilitates patient/family education, as well as participating in Joint/Spine class teaching.
    • Documents accurately and completely pertinent assessments, interventions and outcomes for patients in accordance with the documentation standards, policies, procedures and/or guidelines.
    • Accurately charges for all billable services in conjunction with corresponding documentation.
    • Maintains skills as determined through yearly competency testing.
    • Participates in ongoing educational activities through in-services, education days, self-study or established educational programs.
    • Maintains confidentiality of patient information at all times.
    • Participates in quality improvement initiatives.
    • Practices principles of safety and infection control as defined by policy.
    • Utilizes interpersonal skills to facilitate communication and teamwork between departments, health care workers, patients and families.
    • May assist in collecting and completing Unit-specific Performance Indicators (PI) work.
    • At Manager's discretion, may function as Charge Nurse once being oriented to role.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS:


    Must be proficient in the English language, both verbally and written, in order to communicate effectively with patients, co-workers, physicians, vendors, and the general public.


    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
    Moderate physical effort when working in patient care environment consisting of standing, walking, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching, and stooping. Moderate sitting and keyboarding when performing administrative responsibilities. Fine and gross motor skills and manual dexterity to operate keyboard and other equipment. Occasionally lift and/or move 25 to 50 pounds. Must be able to respond quickly and effectively to an emergency.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:
    Climate controlled environment with occasional periods of being outside.

    Exposed to blood borne pathogens, odorous chemicals and specimens, toxic chemicals, electrical and mechanical hazards, confused or combative patients, bio-contaminated waste, and unpleasant elements.

    Subject to stressful situations, long or irregular hours.

    Required
