    GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

    Drives and operates trucks and equipment in the loading, hauling and distribution of materials; performs construction and maintenance activities.
    EXAMPLES OF WORK

    •Must be able to operate trucks and equipment around power lines, above and below surface gas lines, phone lines, and water and sewer lines.

    •Operates chain saws, skill saws, heavy-duty drills, spray guns, concrete tools, 8-ton chain hoists, ARC welders, grinders, torches, piling hammers, compactors and shovels.

    •Operates dump trucks, flat-beds, loaders, backhoes, graders, bulldozers and trenchers.

    •Builds sea walls, which includes driving wood pilings to hold sea wall up, shooting to grade and keeping sea wall in line.

    •Installs guardrails at the end of bridges and beside highways to DOT specifications.

    •Installs, maintains, repairs, and replaces storm water structures such as dams, spillways, weirs, and culverts owned by the county.

    •Repairs wood bridges such as replacing wood decking stringers, caps, and rotten pilings.

    •Builds bridges, replacing wheel guards and wood guide rails.

    •Forms, pours, and finishes concrete in the construction of sidewalks, curbing and driveways.

    •Performs physical labor in the maintenance, restoration or construction of roadways, drainage systems and disposal sites.

    •Cuts trees, limbs and shrubbery on right-of-ways or adjacent road and traffic areas.

    •Clears ditches, culverts, drains, gutters and beaver dams.

    •Performs other duties as assigned.
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education, Training, and Experience: High school diploma or GED supplemented by six (6) months experience in the operation of light trucks and/or related light equipment; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, construction plans and as-built drawings.

    Licenses and/or Certifications: Requires a valid class "B" commercial driver license with air brakes.
    OTHER REQUIREMENTS

    Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate light and heavy complex trucks and equipment requiring manipulation of multiple controls, where excellent eye/hand/foot coordination is essential for safe and productive operations. Must be able to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, or 25 to 100 pounds of force frequently, or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Physical demands are in excess of sedentary work, i.e., manual labor, standing, walking, bending, stooping and climbing, etc. for prolonged periods of time. Must be able to ascend or descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps and the like, using feet and legs or hands and arms.

    Language Ability: Must be able to communicate effectively in Standard English, and to convey information to others.

    Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions; to deal with problems involving concrete variables in situations where limited standardized exists; to make independent judgments in the absence of supervisor; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.

    Numerical Aptitude: Must be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide; determine weight; may require the ability to calculate decimals and percentages.

    Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergencies or tight deadlines. Requires the ability to exercise consistent tact and courtesy when in frequent contact with various professionals, county staff, and the general public.
