    Position Reports To

    Foods Technology Leader, Principal; Business Manager

    Position Purpose

    This position description describes in general terms the normal duties which the Food Technology Assistant is expected to undertake. However, the duties described may vary or be amended from time to time without changing timetables and the level of responsibility associated with the position. The position reports to the Foods Teacher and the Business Manager.

    The role requires:

    The duties for this position include but are not limited to the following:

  • Prepare food, equipment and trays, tea towels, oven mitts, dishcloths for the commencement of classes.
  • Use and maintain equipment and facilities in accordance with school procedures and manufacturer's instructions.
  • Clearing away equipment and materials after use and check that they are maintained in a safe, clean and ready to use condition.
  • Clean stores, benches of food as soon as possible.
  • Support staff and students by supplying required equipment.
  • Ensure work areas, materials and equipment are maintained in a clean and ready to use condition.
  • Undertake administrative tasks associated with the ordering of food.
  • Collate staff orders, check, receive and store all food on its arrival.
  • Follow correct hygiene and safety procedures when handling food.
  • Support Food Technology Teachers with any extra food preparation the school may require.
  • Wash and dry laundry as required.
  • Ensure adequate cleaning supplies are available.
  • Undertake daily cleaning of kitchens, dining room and prep area.
  • Participate in team meetings when required
  • End of Term and Annual duties:
  • Clean and clear refrigerator and freezers as far as possible.
  • Check all items from cupboards and drawers for cleanliness. Clean cupboards and drawers if necessary.
  • Check stoves for cleanliness.
  • Food storerooms, clean all shelves and cupboards, sweeping and mopping floors.
  • Make adequate provision against dust, insects and rodents.
  • Conduct annual stock take and cleaning procedures.
  • Other duties as directed by the Principal or Business Manager

  • To support the delivery of relevant curriculum programs within the Food Technology area.
  • To work under the direction of the Food and Technology Teacher/Manager, using established routines, methods and procedures.
  • To solve work problems by reference to established procedures and practices through liaison with supervisory staff. Refer problems of a more complex nature to appropriate personnel, (Business Manager, Technology Area Manager, Administration team).
  • To assist colleagues, both teaching and non-teaching in the tasks being undertaken in the Food Technology area and provide assistance to students as directed.
  • The Food Technology Assistant requires a broad knowledge of safe food handling DET and associated health regulations.
  • To maintain confidentiality, ie able to be trusted with private and sensitive information and be accountable for quality, accuracy and timelines of tasks undertaken, using initiative and effective and efficient work practices.
  • Assist teaching staff with enforcement of appropriate safety procedures.
  • Assist students in relation to their equipment and materials needs in the classroom
  • Assist with security of equipment and buildings.
  • Support College activities requiring the use of food and the food department resources.
  • Liaise with Business Manager to undertake relevant staff professional development and training.
  • Maintain a healthy and safe working environment.

    SCHOOL PROFILE

    Laverton P-12 College resides within the western suburbs of Melbourne in the local area of Hobson's Bay. The College is a merged school operating on the site of the former Laverton Secondary College. It opened in 2008 with new buildings first occupied in 2009, however, it was not until mid-2011 that all levels of the College were operational. The school is comprised of seven permanent buildings and two relocatable buildings, providing a range of specialised learning spaces, including a gymnasium, performing arts centre, instrumental music rooms, a state of the art food technology kitchen and cafe, practical science rooms, technology and engineering spaces, and a well-resourced College library. The College has also prioritised developing the grounds including, building a sports field, volleyball court and an undercover multipurpose field. Laverton P-12 College is modern, well- resourced and inviting school.

    In 2022, the College has an enrolment of over 700 students across Foundation to Year 12. The community comprises of diverse family backgrounds, with 48% of students speaking languages other than English at home and a high proportion of students coming from the Karen, Pacific Islander and Middle Eastern communities. The College Student Family Occupation (SFO) of .74 indicates a high number of students come from disadvantaged economic backgrounds. While the Student Family Occupation and Education (SFOE) is slightly lower at , indicating higher circumstances known to make a difference in student learning. The college is supported in 2022 by the Differentiated School Support Initiative.

    The College staffing profile consists of approximately 100 full time and part time equivalent staff; including 4 Principal class, 6 Leading Teachers, 3 Learning Specialists, 54 teachers, 28 Education Support Staff and 2 Paraprofessionals. The College has invested heavily in building the professional knowledge of our staff and working collaboratively in teams to support the needs of our students. All teachers plan within a structured Teaching and Learning Cycle and this is enhanced with teachers engaging in PLT Inquiry Cycles informed by student needs across cohorts.
