Job Description

1. Checks the operating room environment for cleanliness prior to opening sterile supplies and damp dusts flat surfaces if needed. Assists with turnover cleaning of operating room between cases if needed. 2. Reviews the surgeon preference cards and ensures all supplies and equipment are pulled correctly against the proposed surgical procedure. Assists with case pick if assigned. Prepares sterile fields for use, following principles of aseptic technique and ensures sterile fields are constantly monitored. 3. Assists the circulating nurse with preparation of the patient for the procedure including prepping, positioning if assigned. 4. Performs the duties of a scrubbed person during the entire surgical procedure and maintains counts, ensuring effective hand-off communication when relieved. Drapes the patient, passes instruments safely, prepares suturing materials appropriately, keeps sponges and all supplies organized and easy to visualize, and assists with application of dressings at the end of the procedure. 5. Completes post procedure activities. Ensures specimens are handed off to the circulating nurse, identifying how it should be labeled (along with the surgical team), ensures it is placed into the specimen container (as per protocol) and submits the specimen to the laboratory for testing/examination/disposal. 6. Checks to ensure good working order of instruments and equipment prior to use and identifies when defective and works with the materials manager to remove the items from service. Performs routine biological monitoring of the sterilizers as well as documentation of results when assigned as per policy. Notifies the manager immediately if results of testing demonstrates malfunction of equipment. 7. Provides mentoring and guidance in orientation activities for surgical technologists new to the OR department. 8. Promotes self development and advancement of skills. 9. Promotes quality improvement, staff and patient safety, and cultural diversity through department operations and by personal performance 10. Provides service in a manner that is appropriate for the patient's age; demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to meet the patient's physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs. 11. Presents a courteous and helpful demeanor, appropriate for age, to all patients, visitors, other employees/medical staff members, or any other person an employee encounters while representing the organization. 12. Maintains current knowledge related to applicable statutes, regulations, guidelines and standards necessary to perform job duties in accordance with the requirements of the Corporate Compliance Plan. Complies with the requirements of the Code of Conduct, Corporate Compliance Plan and Compliance Policies and Procedures, including training requirements. Participates in compliance activities under the direction of the Department Manager and Corporate Compliance Officer.
