    Internal Posting-Only permanent North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) employees working in a temporary, permanent full-time, permanent part-time, probationary, trainee, or time-limited position or layoff candidate with the NC Department of Transportation eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by General Statute (GS) 126 (State Personnel Act) may apply.


    Salary Grade:
    NC06/ Recruitment Range $33, $58,226.00

    This position will function as a Transportation Worker III in the Special Maintenance Operations Group (SMOG). Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the SMOG unit. Work includes setting up work zones, installing traffic control devices on major routes as well as rural roads. Work includes chip sealing roads, shoulder maintenance, debris cleanup, and operating hand and power tools.

    This position includes the proficient operation of various heavy equipment that includes, but is not limited to, chip spreader, asphalt distributor, sweeper, tandem and quad dump trucks, skid steers, motor grader, and excavators.

    Position may be subject to emergency call back and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. Work includes training other employees in the safe operation of equipment.


    • Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices
    • Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation or asphalt patching.
    • Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew.
    • Experience in snow and ice removal operations.
    • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper.

    Additional Expectations:
    Employee will need the ability to supervise work crews and promote a safe work environment. Employee will need the ability to maintain a working knowledge of all operating procedures. Employee will need the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Employee will need the ability to maintain effective working relations with other employees and the general public. Employee will need the ability to perform quantity calculations. Must be able to lift and carry up to 80 lbs. Safety toe footwear will be needed.


    Must operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker (N) endorsement.

    Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.

    Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position.

    As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
