    Summary

You will serve as a Flight Safety Analyst in the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) Flight Safety Branch within the Safety & Mission Assurance Division located at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility (WFF). As a Flight Safety Analyst for suborbital and orbital aerospace flight vehicles, with a focus on sounding rockets, you will coordinate, monitor, maintain, and use technological processes in support of operations and safety analysis for aerospace and aeronautical programs from definition to launch.

    Duties

    • Duties described below are at the highest grade advertised. Duties assigned at lower grade levels will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee.
    • Identify flight hazards and controls to mitigate flight hazards in aerospace or aeronautical vehicle tests or operations. Perform risk studies and prepare risk analysis and flight safety plans.
    • Analyze mission objectives to assure compliance with NASA and GSFC/WFF Range Flight Safety criteria and advise range users on risk factors as they pertain to the mission. Adapt analysis methods and approaches to meet the unique requirements.
    • Work with senior analysts to conduct conceptual definition studies and complex detailed analysis to establish preliminary designs and alternatives for a variety of advanced systems on proposed new projects for which no precedents are available.
    • Perform theoretical, aerodynamic studies to evaluate various factors (performance, stability, trajectory, etc.) that affect flight safety. Perform expectation of casualty and protected area impact probability studies.
    • Calculate flight safety limits for guided and unguided launch vehicles. Identify alternative approaches or compromises to develop the most effective technical solutions and analyze post-flight data.
    • Provide technical advice in flight systems safety both internal and external. Serve as a member of working groups, review panels, and failure investigation boards as required.
    • Integrate various study and analysis results into comprehensive technical briefings and reports to review panels and senior management to ensure that the risks for the mission are understood.
    • Perform operational flight safety support functions and duties for assigned launches. Prepare and validates flight safety computer graphics displays and real-time computers are operational for launch.
    • Foster a culture of engagement, diversity, inclusiveness, excellence and innovation. Champion NASA's commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility to create an environment that promotes a commitment to safety, integrity, and teamwork.
