- Prepare and set up equipment, materials, and solutions for laboratory experiments using safety procedures in handling hazardous materials such as acids, bases, oxidizers, etc.
- Prepares demonstrations as requested by instructors; assists instructor with lecture and laboratory material; conducts laboratory or lecture demonstrations.
- Assist instructors with planning laboratory assignments and schedules.
- Search literature to determine methods to improve laboratory techniques and the teaching of scientific principles to students.
- Advise faculty and students of potential safety problems with equipment or chemicals.
- Estimates quantity and quality of supplies and materials needed; orders equipment and supplies for the course; follows through with purchasing department or procurement of supplies; maintains adequate stock levels.
- Operate and perform routine maintenance and repair tasks on laboratory and demonstration instruments and equipment; instruct students, teaching assistants and faculty in the use of equipment.
- Follow appropriate disposal methods for waste generated in laboratory experiments.
- Organize and prioritize tasks to ensure they are accomplished and meet strict deadlines as set forth in syllabus/class schedule.
- Maintain organized records of lab schedules and prep material requirements.
- Write, edit, or modify laboratory handouts or manuals; modify experiments; advises instructors of potential problems with existing programs.
- Work collaboratively with faculty and staff to support student learning.
- Adhere to procedures and guidelines established by the college.
- May act as coordinator of laboratory, controlling equipment, chemicals, and use of space.
- Monitor laboratory areas to ensure compliance with safety policies; assist in the development of safe laboratory procedures.
- Maintain safe working environment; understand and follow applicable laws, regulations, established standards.
- Coordinate laboratory support, maintenance, and stock room functions.
- Provide clean and organized labs and materials.
- Maintain and/or implement an up-to-date electronic data base of equipment, supplies and chemicals in the lab stock room.
- Provide direction to hourly employees or work study students.
- Participate in campus-wide events as directed.
- Participate in committees as appropriate.
- Perform other duties as required.
- Associate's degree with major study in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related natural science field; OR a minimum of one year of experience as a scientific instructional technician; OR equivalent education and experience.
- Experience working with chemicals in a laboratory setting; handling chemicals and hazardous and or biological waste.
- Experience with proper PPE, lab hygiene, and lab safety standards.
- Ability to work independently.

- Bachelor's Degree with major study in a science related field; OR two years of full-time experience as Scientific Instructional Technician; OR equivalent education and experience.
- Chemistry degree is preferred.
- General and organic chemistry lab support experience.
- Prior responsibility for technician support of a college-level science course.
- Experience with the design and construction of laboratory materials and equipment.
- Experience working with advanced instrumentation including GC, NMR, IR, Spectrophotometers, and pH sensors.
- Student focused: Search out ways to enhance student learning by improving laboratory experience.
- Ability to investigate/research external information resources to determine proper procedures and best laboratory practices.
- Basic knowledge of chemical use, waste disposal and laboratory safety.

Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the Instructional & Classroom Support Tech 4, Science Division, the Instructional & Classroom Support Technician 2 will coordinate and provide laboratory support to science-related undergraduate science courses, primarily Chemistry with occasional support for Physics and Geology. Lab set-ups are coordinated with the faculty and completed without specific instruction. The position assists other instruction & classroom support technicians, and science faculty to complete assignments. This position is required to abide by procedures and guidelines established by the college. This position reports to the Instruction & Classroom Support Technician 4.

Instructional Support
Minimum Qualifications:
This is an eleven-month, forty-hour per week, cyclic position, with four unpaid weeks off from August 16 - September 15. Hours of work will be primarily 7:00 am to 3:30 pm Monday through Friday.
Schedule may vary to meet laboratory and campus needs.
