Description
FLSA Employment Status: Nonexempt/Hourly
May be called to cover all shifts including weekends
Shift coverage is normally 10-12 hours per assignment
JOB SUMMARY
The Medical technologists operate sophisticated equipment to perform tests on samples of patients' blood, urine, and other fluids and tissues.
Reporting Structure:
Reports to the Director of Laboratory Services
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Education
Bachelor Degree from an accredited college or university in medical technology or related field required. Master degree preferred.
Work Experience
Some experience and/or internship experience preferred.
License/Certification
Medical laboratory technologists certificate from the American Medical Technologists organization.
Tennessee Medical Laboratory License preferred
Basic Life Support (BLS),
Current certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS),
Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NCI),

Analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking abilities.
Good communication skills are required for working with patients, lab customers, and medical staff.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Prepares cultures of fluid and tissue samples, submit them to testing procedures, and studies the results to determine diagnoses
Set ups, operates, and calibrates medical equipment
Collects and labels samples of bodily fluids and tissues
Prepares cultures of samples for analysis
Places cultures on slides and examine them with a microscope or automatic analyzer;
Conducts a range of tests to determine the samples' chemical makeup, contaminants, and other components
Provides results of tests and analyses to doctors and patients
Properly stores samples to preserve them for further analysis
Cross-matches blood for transfusions
Keeps the lab neat, organized, and sanitary
Creates and oversee data-accuracy protocols
Ensures that safety and disease-prevention policies are followed
Maintains patient report forms and lab records
Attends training sessions, receive continuing education, read medical journals, and join professional organizations.
OTHER DUTIES
May provide leadership and training for the Medical Laboratory Technologist.
Performs other related duties and special project work as required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Prolonged periods of sitting, standing, and walking
Must be able to lift, push, and pull up to 40 pounds during a scheduled work shift.
Must be able to see with corrective eye wear
Must be able to hear clearly with assistance
May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases
Able to handle emergency and/or crisis situations
May be required to wear protective equipment as necessary
Transferring, repositioning patients.
Reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching for patient care functions.
Ability to perform effectively in a stressful and fast-paced environment.
Ability to pass all required health and other screening tests including random and reasonable suspicion drug screens.
