    There is currently one vacancy in the Public Works Department
    • Traffic Engineering division.

    This position's top goal is to oversee traffic studies, development review, and other transportation planning responsibilities, supplemented by traffic engineering duties as listed below.

    Examples of DutiesThe Assistant Traffic Engineer evaluates, conducts, and processes a variety of transportation projects including, but not limited to, traffic requests, traffic plans, improvement plans, subdivision maps, radar speed surveys, traffic signal timing and coordination, bicycle paths and pedestrian walkways and access routes.

    Performs accident analyses, field surveys, and makes appropriate recommendations.

    Conducts studies of street and intersection capacity and recommends necessary street changes for improved traffic movement; plans and coordinates traffic and speed surveys; plans traffic signal, traffic sign, street light, striping and other control devices for locations; develops plans, estimates, and special provisions for electrical contract work involving traffic signal and safety lighting systems.

    Coordinates traffic signal installation projects and operates the Transportation Management Center. Prepares complicated traffic signal timing schedules and diagrams and evaluates results obtained following installation of timing schedules.

    Coordinates traffic-calming, signing, striping, and construction activities with other agencies and citizen groups including school districts, Caltrans, SANDAG, North County Transit District and other local, state and federal agencies, and other City departments.

    Produces graphics, maps and plans using Auto Cad. Consults with supervisor regarding difficult and problematic issues and keeps him/her informed as to the course of action. Performs other related work as required.


    Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of:

    The application of engineering principles and practices as they relate to traffic engineering, traffic studies and traffic control equipment.

    Application of cost estimating.
    Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations.

    Modern office procedures, methods and equipment, computers and applicable software applications including computer aided drafting and design techniques, geographic information systems, calculators, hand tools, testing and measuring equipment and stop watch.

    Principles and procedures of record keeping.
    Principles of business letter writing and basic report preparation.
    Principles and techniques of public relations.


    Ability to:
    Perform complex engineering and mathematical calculations and draft plans and maps.
    Read and comprehend technical engineering documents, schematics, diagrams and blueprints.
    Coordinate and oversee traffic-related projects.
    Learn to prepare plans, specifications, and technical reports.
    Maintain and update accurate records and files.
    Prepare clear and concise reports.
    Work independently and efficiently to carry out assignments.
    Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
    Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
    Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.


    Experience and Training GuidelinesExperience:
    One year of traffic engineering or transportation planning experience or related engineering experience

    Training:
    Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in engineering or a related field

    License or Certificate:
    Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license.
    Possession of an Engineer-In
    • Training Certificate is highly desirable.

    Working Conditions and Selection Process Environmental Conditions:

    Physical Conditions:
    Essential functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time; speaking and hearing to exchange information; visual acuity to read and interpret specifications and drawings

    Selection Process:

    The process may include any combination of a written exam, oral exam, and/or skills assessment to further evaluate job-related qualifications.

    Candidates who successfully complete the selection process will be placed on an eligible list for a period of six months.
