    In this role with the Pierce County Surface Water Management (SWM) team, you will be focused on identifying and responding to activities or incidents that could lead to the discharge of pollutants to stormwater systems and the environment.

    You will collaborate with other departments and teams to support the implementation of Pierce County's Phase I NPDES Municipal Stormwater Permit.

    You and your teams efforts will contribute to reducing stormwater pollution that reaches streams, lakes, groundwater, the Puget Sound, and neighboring municipalities' stormwater drainage systems.

    How to be Successful in the Role:

    Your success in this role will come from being comfortable doing physical field work (carrying equipment to field sites in a variety of weather conditions, walking over uneven terrain, and interfacing with the public) as well as having strong attention to detail and a positive attitude.

    Your experience maintaining field logs, and calibrating instruments as well as working with spreadsheets will be utilized often.


    Your ability to work in a team environment, solve problems, be flexible, and have a growth mindset will also ensure your success.


    Your Future in this Role:


    As a vital team member, you will provide technical assistance and direction, conduct inspections, investigate any discharges that impact the county-owned stormwater system, ensure timely follow-up, and guarantee that all documentation and practices align with local, state, and federal regulations.

    This role includes both outdoor and indoor work.

    Additionally, you will have the chance to collaborate with other Surface Water Management divisions, such as water quality monitoring and inspection teams.

    The Water Quality Specialist series offers a great foundation for future positions with the Planning and Public Works Department and Pierce County.

    Core Daily Responsibilities:
    Conduct complex on-site inspections of stormwater management facilities associated with industrial, commercial, single-family, and multi-family land use.
    Determine or verify the proper operation and maintenance of stormwater management facilities and implementation of stormwater Best Management Practices.
    Record data and information utilizing various job-related software applications and convert it into a usable and understandable format.
    Maintain records, charts, logs, spreadsheets.
    Prepare written reports and maps, summarize findings, and write a variety of memos and letters.
    Provide technical assistance to County departments, governmental agencies, consulting firms, and members of the public.
    Respond to citizen concerns and questions regarding stormwater systems, regulations, and Best Management Practices.
    Meet the travel requirements of the position.
    Perform the physical requirements of the position; work within the established working conditions of the position.
    Work a flexible schedule, which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Two years of college or post-high school technical training or one or more years of progressively responsible related experience.
    Additional education or experience may substitute for the recruiting requirements.
